Cavs turnovers too much in final NSC game loss
On a cool crisp night in Culver, the Laville Lancers came to town for the final Northern State Conference match ever. The Lancers were looking stop a five game losing streak against to Culver.
The first half was played well by Culver getting the only touchdown of the half from Everett Krueger from one yard out on that 45 yard drive, 6-0. Extra point no good.
The second half was a different story. Three Culver turnovers to start the third quarter started an avalanche of miscues from that point on for the Cavs.
Laville’s Caleb Dudek scored as the result of the first Culver fumble to give the visiting Lancers a 7-6 lead.
Then a Preston Hansel interception offered Laville’s next score, again Caleb Dudek the recipient of a 1 yard touchdown run to pull Laville ahead 14-6.
The only fourth quarter score came for Laville when Culver fumbled an onside kick. End result a Ethan Kertai 13 yard run to finalize the outcome 21-6.
Lancer Head Coach, Will Hostrawser, praised his teams second half effort, “I cannot tell you what I said in the locker room at halftime. You can’t air it! (he then laughed) No, the message was simple, you guys have to start winning the line of scrimmage so we can start doing what we do best and thats run the football. And my kids responded as they have all season long.”.
Culver Head Coach Darrin Rodriguez said, “I liked our first half performance. But like it’s been for most of the season, when one bad thing happens, we can’t seem to put it behind us and start over. Those turnovers are correctable. The problem is we don’t know how to overcome them. It will be a point of discussion during film session.”
The Laville Lancers (6-3) will host Lake Station (4-5) in the first round of the Sectionals. The Lancers have not won a first round game since 2008, a partial forfeit season.
The Culver Cavaliers (2-7) will travel to undefeated (9-0) Whiting for their first round game.
