HS Football: Laville wins first Sectional Opener in 5 years

It was a game that had a little bit of everything, including a 35 minute power outage!   By games end, the Lake Station Eagles powerful offense suffered the same type of outage as Laville pitched a 41-0 shutout to advance to the second round for the first time in 5 years.

Lake Station had emassed over 3,500 yards of total offense coming into Friday nights Sectional opener.  They had scored over 130 points in the last 3 games combined.  It was a team that played so confident on offense, they had punted but only a couple times the entire season.

“Lake Station is talented team.  To run the kind of offense they do.  To teach that kind of offense is impressive in itself.   We knew they were a no huddle, quick snapping, hurry up kind of offense.  My goal for us (Laville) was to keep the ball out of their hands.”, said Laville Head Coach Will Hostrawser.

That is exactly what Laville finished doing all four quarters.  Only 2 first downs in the first half for Lake Station and four scores by Laville put the game away early.  Laville’s “ground and pound” style of offense simply was too much for the Fighting Eagles by the end of the 2nd quarter.

“I felt our offensive and defensive lines played well.  We were physical and we were consistently successful in what we wanted to accomplish.   Mason Leed had a great game for us on both sides of the football.  But tonight was really a team effort by everyone.   I was really pleased how the kids responded during practice this week and how they carried it over to tonight’s game.”, added Hostrawser.

Frustration set in midway through the 3rd quarter for Lake Station.  12 penalties by nights end cost the Eagles 133 yards.
