Boys B-ball: Glenn holds of Concord comeback

It was the first game at the Falcons nest for John Glenn on Friday night, and some home cooking proved valuable in a 65-62 win over Concord.

Before the game even started you knew this match-up had the potential to be a track meet indoors with the amount of athletes on the court.  Glenn got off to a quick 10-0 run before Concord coach Steve Austin called his first timeout.  However, the Falcons kept attacking the basket with their transition game and outside shooting from Alec Runyon and Calvin Kretchmer to capture a 32-21 Halftime lead.

Concord came out more aggressive with the fullcourt pressure which eventually broke down Glenn’s momentum.  A 12 lead methodically disappeared due to Concord defensive effort and big shots.   Concord’s Coaches son, Brett Austin, started getting hot from the floor and hit a couple of big shots in the fourth quarter including a three pointer to pull within 5 points in the final 1:30 of the ballgame.

Glenn’s Calvin Kretchmer made a great one-on-one baseline move to give Glenn a 65-62 lead with 13 seconds left in the game….a move that proved to be the difference-maker. Concord’s Brett Austin eventually had a chance to tie the ballgame with 5 seconds left in the game as he somehow escaped a Falcon defender in the corner but his three point shot was short and Glenn grabbed the miss to hold on for the win.
