South Central Tops Knox in Volleyball Season Opener!
The South Central Lady Satellites defended their home court well in their season opener against the Knox Lady Redskins, as they were able to defeat the ‘Skins in three sets 25-15, 25-22, and 26-24. “Being a home game, we thought they were going to come out and have a lot of nerves” South Central Head Coach Jan Fitzpatrick said. “So we just said, ‘start fielding something’. We don’t need the big swing early, take some strategic shots and build some momentum”. With many girls competing well from start to finish, it was difficult for Fitzpatrick to single out one individual who she felt did well, “Lexy Wade and Alle Garner, they’re our two captains, they’re great leaders”. Fitzpatrick went on to say, “They try to make things happen when they’re out there. They serve aggressively. Alle played some great defense, took big swings, she takes these kids under her wing and keeps them focused”. Fitzgerald was also impressed with senior Lanie Criswell, “First time set for varsity, she did a nice job tonight”.
Knox Head Coach Tammy Dearth was fairly upbeat after the loss, “Definitely I thought our passing has improved, much more-so than the scrimmage the other night” Dearth said. “I saw a lot of good things with our hitting, our setting, and our blocking. I think if we put it all together, we’ll see some good things happening here”. The Lady Redskins had a lot of contributions throughout the night from a plethora of players. “When it came to hitting, Joie Grenner did a great job with her passing” Dearth continued. “I think our setting was really good by Emma Binkley, I think Jayla Williams just did a tremendous job serving tonight.”
Both teams will be back in action Wednesday, August 21st when South Central travels to Boone Grove and Knox plays host to Kouts.
