Lady ‘Cats Start the Season Off Right

Expectations are always high when it comes to Starke County basketball, especially when it comes to the 2-time State Champion Oregon-Davis Lady Bobcats. On Tuesday night, the Lady ‘Cats got the 2019-2020 season off to a great start, as they were able to come away with a 79-30 win over Trinity Greenlawn.

It was no surprise to see the Bobcats’ scorebook show four players reaching double digits. What was surprising for those on the outside looking in, was the scoring explosion from Junior Mercedes Rhodes, who scored a game high 35 points as she knocked down seven 3-pointers, while scoring 33 of her points in the first half!

“During warmups I was hitting a lot of them” Rhodes said about her outside shooting performance. “I was hoping I could keep it going during the game, and after I hit three or four, I just kept feeling it and kept letting it fly”. Rhodes did not hesitate to give her teammates credit for their play in the win.

“Katie handling the ball, we just count on her to do all the ball handling for us, and then her assists and everything”. Rhodes continued, “Then Reece on the defensive side taking on rebounds, going up strong. It really helps us during the games”.

After getting his 398th career win, Head Coach Terry Minix was pleased with the all around effort by his team in the win. “I thought the girls played extremely well” Minix said. “We executed some decent offense in the first half. Second half we played a lot of the Freshmen primarily, trying to get their feet wet a little bit, and I thought they did.” He continued, “I thought McKenna Chessor did a heck of a job and really had some real nice post moves down low. Obviously Mercedes shooting the basketball, the kid’s unbelievable. Jayden (Worthington) did really well. We had Reece (Danford) and Jayden both with double-doubles. So we have a lot to look forward to in our next game”.

The Lady Bobcats will be back in action on Saturday when they travel to Portage to take on the Lady Indians who defeated Andrean on Tuesday 58-56.
