Winamac Gets HNAC Win At Home

The Winamac Lady Warriors (3-1, 1-0) wasted little time against the Culver Lady Cavaliers (3-3, 0-1) as they were able to get their third win of the year in a 33-20 win at home. The Lady Warriors jumped out to a 12-4 lead at the end of the first quarter, with a great mixture of contributions from the starters as well as the reserves. The Lady Cavs would continue to fight as they were able to outscore Winamac 9-8 in the second quarter to make it a 20-13 game at the half. The Lady Warriors would continue to steadily increase the lead in the second half as they outscored Culver 8-3 in the third quarter, and finished up by outscoring the Cavs 5-4 in the final stanza.

It was a well balanced scoring attack by the Lady Warriors from the start, as they would have six players score between two and nine points in the ballgame, led by Hailey Sanders who dropped in nine points to lead all scores. After Sanders would come Kendal Johnson with seven, Maggie Smith with six, Blake Bailey with five, Taylor Jennings with four, and Alyssa Villanueva with two. Following the game, Head Coach Kole Kroft was relieved that his Lady Warriors were up to the challenge of their Hoosier North Athletic Conference foes. “I knew they were much improved” Kroft said following the win. “They were physical, they came at us. It’s a good game for us” Kroft continued. “It was a grinder, but in the end, you’re going to have to rely on your defense sometimes”.

The Lady Cavs were led in scoring by Lily Hayes who had eight points, followed by Alex Temme with five, Kenzie Binkley, Madi Shedrow, and Sarah Walters all chipped in two, and Cerenna Eakright rounded out the scoring for Culver with one point. Despite the loss, Culver Head Coach Tammy Shedrow was able to find positives from her young team. “Lily Hayes played extremely well tonight for us. Her effort was tremendous” Shedrow said. “I thought Kenzie Binkley played fantastic defense”.

The Ashley Derrickson/Five Star Player of the Game on WKVI went to Winamac’s Maggie Smith, who had a solid, all-around game in the win. Smith was the team’s third leading scorer with six points, she led the team in rebounding with seven, and also led the team in steals with four.

The win makes it three in a row for the Lady Warriors, while, after getting off to a 3-0 start, the Lady Cavaliers have now dropped their last three in a row. Neither team has much time to lick their wounds as both the Lady Cavaliers and the Lady Warriors are back in action on the twenty-first, with Culver traveling to Elkhart Christian and Winamac playing host to North White.
