Doubleheader Provides Great Entertainment At South Central!
South Central’s boys as well as girls basketball teams have had great success in the last two days. The Lady Satellites were able to earn their eighth win of the season as they defeated the Wheeler Lady Bearcats on Wednesday 67-32. It was a game the Lady Satellites were able to control from the get-go as they jumped out to an early 19-2 lead at the end of the first quarter.
Throughout the ballgame, the Lady Satellites would apply mind-blowing pressure on the Lady Bearcats, accumulating twenty steals as a team, with eleven coming in the first half. The forced turnovers were a major key for the Lady Satellites throughout the game, as they were able to create an abundance of scoring off of the eleven first half steals. Head Coach Wes Bucher would keep the visiting Bearcats guessing throughout the game, as he would have his girls bouncing in and out of trapping defenses in the full, half, and quarter court. Junior Amber Wolf would be one of the main leaders when it came to thefts by the Lady Satellites, as she would have a game high six steals. She would not be the only SC girl with sticky fingers on the night. Teammate Faith Biggs would show her ability to hound the ball handlers as well, picking off five steals of her own.
When it came to scoring, the Lady Satellites would find three individuals in double-digits, led by Olivia Marks, who had a game-high 18 points, followed by Biggs with 12, and Wolf with 11. The girls from Union Mills would end up having eight different individuals score throughout the game, while having six individuals with at least one steal in the game as well.
It would be Amber Wolf’s effort of 11 points, 7 rebounds, and 6 steals that would earn her the Ashley Derrickson/Five Star Player of the Game honors following the big 67-32 win over Wheeler.
Twenty-Four hours later, it would be the Boys’ turn, as the Satellites played host to the West Central Trojans. Much like the Lady Satellites, the Boys would count on the entire roster to help on both the offensive and defensive ends of the floor. The Satellites would also be able to to get eight individuals in the scoring column when all was said-and-done, led by 6’8 Junior Brendon Carr, who put up a team-high 16 points on the night, followed by Trent Hudspeth with 11, and Gavin Scott with 10. Carr was no slouch rebounding either, as he pulled down 11 rebounds to round out his double-double for the night.
The Satellites were able to take advantage of a lot of mistakes made by the young Trojan team from Francesville, executing well in transition off of turnovers to keep momentum firmly in their possession. Zack Christy would lead the Satellites in thievery, as he had three steals in the game, something that South Central has grown accustomed to.
Eventually, the Trojans would calm down and begin playing up to the level of the Satellites. The shell shock would wear off behind the sharpshooting of Brayden Huber, who caught fire from behind the arc, knocking down a game-high four 3-pointers on his way to an 18-point night, to lead all scorers.
It would not be only the offense that picked up for the Trojans. Defensively, West Central would be able to get five steals in the second half, which led to a major boost in the confidence of the young Trojans. Garrett Leman would prove to be a thorn in the side of the Satellites’ offense, as he would find a team-high three steals in the game.
It would be the effort of the big man, Brendon Carr, that would earn him the Ashley Derrickson/Five Star Player of the Game, as his double-double performance of 16 points and 11 rebounds would be accompanied by 2 steals in the Satellites’ third win of the season, bringing them back to .500 on the season at 3-3.
The Satellites will be able to enjoy some Holiday time off, as they will not be back in action until December 28th, when they will take on Kankakee Valley in the first round of the K.V. Tournament. Depending on how the first rounds play out, the Satellites will either take on Harrison (West Lafayette) or Illiana Christian in their second game.
West Central will also have time to lick their wounds, as the Trojans will be off until the 28th, when they will have their first home game in the month of December, as they play host to Scott Bowersock’s Washington Township Senators.
