Satellites Fly High In Win Over Cavaliers
Things would get off to a slow start at South Central, as the Satellites played host to the Culver Cavaliers. With great attendance by both fan bases, it was a tremendous atmosphere for Indiana High School Basketball. The first quarter of the non conference bout between the Satellites and Cavaliers, would be somewhat pedestrian, as the two teams struggled to find the basket, seemingly trying to figure each other out early on. When the horn sounded at the end of the opening quarter, only 14 points would be logged on the scoreboard, as the Satellites led the Cavaliers 8-6.
The Satellites would begin to turn up the heat in the second quarter, as their 1-3-1 trapping zone defense began to take a toll on the Cavaliers. The biggest spark for South Central, however, would come from their outside shooting, as the Satellites began to knock down the three-ball with regularity. South Central Junior Trent Hudspeth would be the leader from behind the arc, as he knocked down four three-pointers in the game, which accounted for all 12 of his points. The Satellites would end up outscoring the Cavaliers 14-6 in the second quarter, to take a 10-point lead into the locker room at the half, 22-12.
SC would continue to accelerate their scoring in the second half, as well as continue to increase their defensive intensity. The third quarter would see the Satellites outscore the Cavaliers 14-2, to take a 36-14 lead into the final quarter. The fourth quarter would be fairly even between the two teams, with Culver looking to be more aggressive against the Satellites’ defense. South Central would once again win the quarter, this time by a count of 10-9, to get the 46-23 win. Senior Guard Zack Christy would put together the most consistent scoring performance in the ballgame, as he was able to put up a game-high 14 points, with 7 coming in each half. The 6’1 Senior would also account for 6 rebounds, helping him earn the Ashley Derrickson/Five Star Player of the Game honor on WKVI. Culver Junior Owen Clingler would lead the Cavaliers in scoring with 11 points, scoring 8 of the team’s 12 first half points. An impressive rebounding performance was put on by South Central’s Brendan Carr as well as Culver’s Donavan Ziaja, who both accounted for 9 rebounds each to lead their respective teams.
In the end, the win for the Satellites was earned on the defensive end of the floor, as the unrelenting pressure of their 1-3-1 trapping zone defense worked to perfection throughout the ballgame. With the postseason drawing near, it is easy to assume the Satellites will continue to attack future opponents with their potent zone defensive scheme. With their incredibly long and versatile athletes up and down the roster, they will make for a very challenging matchup when the Sectional rolls around.
