Falcons Win At Home, Away From Home
It was a great matchup in an unfamiliar gym on Saturday night, as the John Glenn Falcons played host to the LaVille Lancers at North Liberty Elementary School, the home of the Shamrocks, as The Arie at John Glenn High School is in the process of being refinished.
With a significant size advantage, the Falcons came out ready to go from the start as they were able to jump out to a 19-12 lead in the first quarter, due in large part to the duo of Carter Yung and Brycen Hannah. Hannah would provide a major physical presence in the post all game long for John Glenn, pounding the boards, while also consistently scoring throughout the ball game. As the first half wore along, the aggressiveness of the Falcons on both ends of the floor appeared to be wearing down the Lancers, who were putting forth great effort against the large and athletic Falcons. On the defensive end, the pressure of the Falcons defense would result in eight steals, with Silas Kaser logging five in the first half, with the steals often times resulting in points at the other end of the floor. Both teams continued to show patience at both ends, with Glenn, once again outscoring LaVille in the second quarter by a score of 14-8, giving them a thirteen point lead at the half, 33-20. As the first half wore along, it was clear that the Lancers were adjusting to the physical presence of the Falcons, whose starting lineup consisted of players going 6’0, 6’1, 6’1, 6’4, and 6’6. By the time the horn sounded at the end of the second quarter, LaVille only trailed Glenn by five in the rebounding category, 17-12. For John Glenn, the duo of Carter Yung and Brycen Hannah would account for twenty-two of the team’s thirty-three first half points, with the Falcons seemingly being in a constant state of attack going towards the basket.
The second half would see a well-adjusted Lancers team come out of the locker room. After being a little shell-shocked in the first half with the size and athleticism of John Glenn, LaVille came out in the second half with an apparently brand new mentality. The trio of Andrew Dill, Bobby Good, and Leyton Czarnecki would handle the bulk of the scoring for LaVille throughout the ballgame, as all three would hit double-digits, scoring sixteen, fourteen, and twelve respectively. The offense as well as the defense would come up big in the third quarter, with LaVille outscoring Glenn fourteen to eight, to make the score forty-one to thirty-four as the teams headed into the final quarter of play. Once again, LaVille would continue to chip away at the lead in the fourth quarter with Dill, Good, and Czarnecki continuing to provide consistent scoring. The Lancers continued to chip away at the lead, but ultimately the clock would be too big an ally for the Falcons. Despite being outscored thirteen to nine in the final quarter, Glenn would have just enough in the tank to come out of the game still undefeated at 3-0, pulling out a fifty to forty-seven win over LaVille.
The Starke County Co-Op Play of the Game on WKVI came in the second quarter with 2:15 remaining. Carter Yung stole the ball away from the Lancers, then went the length of the court to get a layup, giving the Falcons a 31-17 lead. That play led to a confidence boost for the Falcons, who would take a 33-20 lead into the locker room at the half.
The Ashley Derrickson/Five Star Player of the Game on WKVI went to Brycen Hannah, who was the second leading scorer for John Glenn, putting up sixteen points, including 4-5 at the free throw line. The 6’4 Sophomore also led the Falcons in rebounding with eight, while also logging a steal in the victory.
The Falcons will be back in action on December 29th, when they travel to East Noble High School, to participate in the first round of the Max Platt Ford Holiday Shootout, taking on the Heritage High School Patriots in the first round. The Lancers will get back to work on December 23rd, when they play host to the Argos Dragons.
