Consistent Scoring Helps Falcons Soar Over Bobcats!

Despite the final score, the John Glenn Falcons faced a tough task against the Oregon-Davis Bobcats in the first round of the Teachers Credit Union Bi-County Tournament. It was a challenge the Falcons would more than willing and able to take on.

Early in the ballgame, the biggest question for the Bobcats would be, how could they handle the distinct size advantage of the Falcons, which put a lineup on the floor of four players who exceeded six feet, two inches. Oregon-Davis would be able to hang tough with the much bigger Falcons team in the first quarter, only trailing by eight when the horn sounded with the scoreboard showing Glenn in the lead, thirteen to five. As the second quarter got underway one of the main issues for the Bobcats would be in the foul category, as nearly every key player would find themselves in significant foul trouble. The Falcons would be able to take advantage of the situation, as they were able to make their way to the free throw line consistently throughout the ballgame, more importantly, they would be able to convert trips to the line into points from start to finish.

The relentless, attacking offense of John Glenn was like a never ending banging of a battering-ram against a wooden castle gate. The Falcons’ physicality began to wear down the foul-depleted Bobcats as the first half wore along. As they so often do, the Bobcats would grit their teeth and continue to battle. John Glenn Senior Carter Yung would be the main scoring force in the first half, putting up fourteen of his game-high nineteen points in the first two quarters. Yung would be one half of an impressive one-two punch for the Falcons, as he would combine with 6’4 Sophomore teammate Brycen Hannah who would put up eleven points of his own in the first half. When the horn sounded at the end of the second quarter, John Glenn found themselves leading Oregon-Davis thirty-two to nineteen. The Falcons had only out rebounded the Bobcats thirteen to ten in the first half, while logging four steals to O-D’s two. The Bobcats were able to connect on three three-point shots compared to Glenn’s two. Based off of those statistics, it would be hard to figure out how Oregon-Davis trailed by thirteen points at the half. The answer? Free throws!

Throughout the ballgame, free-throw attempts were heavily in favor of the Falcons. Glenn would see a fourteen point advantage in the first half, just from free throw shooting, as the Falcons hit fourteen of twenty at the line for seventy percent, while the Bobcats did not have a first half free throw attempt. That trend would continue throughout the game as the Falcons continued to attack the basket, resulting in thirty-nine free throw attempts in the game. As the Bobcats desperately tried to keep up with the Falcons, consistent trips to the free-throw line and strong rebounding would end up being the undoing of the Starke County team. As the final horn sounded, John Glenn hit an impressive seventy-one percent of their free throw attempts, connecting on twenty-eight of thirty-nine attempts, while Oregon-Davis finished the game hitting four of six attempts for sixty-six percent.

Between John Glenn’s ability to consistently get to the free-throw line, as well as converting their attempts, along with an impressive defensive effort, which saw the Falcons pull away seven steals, coming from five different individuals, the Bobcats were simply worn down. By the second half, the Falcons were able to hold O-D to just eleven total points, after they had scored fourteen in the second quarter alone. The overwhelming feeling from the Falcons side of things, was that Travis Hannah’s team has started to realize that they could be something special this season. With their combination of size, strength, speed, and overall athleticism, the ceiling is ridiculously high for this John Glenn team. What might be even more impressive than their physical capabilities is the drive that this Falcons roster appears to have. They are not a group that believes simply because they pass the eye test, that they are going to be given anything. They feel the need each and every night to go out and prove themselves as, not just a good team, but a dangerous team!
