Lady Satellites’ Defense Turns Into Offensive Explosion!

Defense was the name of the game for Wes Bucher’s South Central Lady Satellites, as they played host to the Westville Lady Blackhawks on Wednesday Night in a Porter County Conference matchup!

The Lady Satellites came into the ballgame ready to go in every facet of the game, but mainly on the defensive end of the floor. In a sport where sometimes the ball is reluctant to drop through the basket, in the State of Indiana, there is never an excuse to not play good defense. Fortunately, for the Lady Satellites, the offense and defense combined in a major way as South Central improved to fifteen and seven on the year, including a five and one record in the Porter County Conference.

From a defensive standpoint, the Lady Satellites would be tuned in from the start, as they would log ten steals in the first half of play, while taking advantage of fifteen total turnovers by the Lady Blackhawks. As has been seen so often with Wes Bucker coached teams, the Lady Satellites were able to generate a great deal of offense from their defensive intensity. There would be ten individuals who would put up at least three points in the first half for the Lady Satellites, led by Sophomore Lillian Tolmen, who scored all seven of her points in the first half. South Central would also be extremely aggressive on the boards, dominating the glass on both ends of the floor from start to finish, led by Sophomore Olivia Marks, who pulled down nine rebounds in the game. The Lady Satellites would take advantage of nine Westville turnovers in the first quarter, on their way to a twenty-four to eight lead.

As the game progressed, the defensive intensity did not relinquish for South Central. After outscoring the Lady Blackhawks sixteen to five in the second quarter, the Lady Satellites held a forty to thirteen lead at the half. The high level of play would continue throughout the entire second half for South Central, forcing five more turnovers in the third quarter as they outscored Westville twenty to two, before putting up twenty-six points in the fourth quarter, while only surrendering four on their way to an eighty-six to nineteen victory. The Lady Satellites would be led in scoring by Abbie Tomblin, who scored a game-high nineteen points in the win, with fourteen of those coming in the second half. She would be one of four Lady Satellites who would hit the double-digit mark, as she was followed by Olivia Marks (15), Delanie Gale (12), and Elle Kimmel (11). To emphasize the balanced scoring attack of the Lady Satellites, the duo of Tomblin and Kimmel only combined for five, first half points, but in the second half the two would combine for twenty-five, with Kimmel putting up all eleven of her points in the final two quarters! Junior Delanie Gale would be the most consistent scorer for South Central throughout the game, as she was able to put up five points in the first half, with seven more coming in the second, for her twelve total points.

Rebounding and defense would be two major reasons the Lady Satellites were able to come away with such a convincing win, as South Central would outbound Westville forty-two to thirteen in the game, led by Sophomore Olivia Marks who was able to pull down nine rebounds, while 6’0 Junior Lauren Bowmar grabbed six of her own. From a defensive standpoint, South Central would tally twenty-five steals as a team throughout the game, with ten coming in the first half and fifteen in the second. Tomblin would lead her team in this category as well as she was able to take away nine steals in the victory, while Marks would grab five. The other big factor in the victory for the Lady Satellites would come from behind the arc. After not recording a single made three-point shot in the first half, South Central would connect on ten in the second, as seven individuals hit at least one in the winning effort. Providing an unexpected spark for South Central throughout the game would be Sophomore Kate Welsh, who was able to put up solid numbers throughout the game, scoring six points, to go along with five rebounds, and two steals. Fellow Sophomore Lillian Tolmen would also account for solid production. In addition to handling the point guard responsibilities, Tolmen would put up seven points, to go along with five rebounds, and a steal, scoring all seven of her points in the first half.

The Starke County Co-Op Play of the Game on WKVI came in the first quarter with 2:17 remaining, as an entry pass to the post found it’s way to Olivia Marks, who was able to power the ball in to give South Central their first double-digit lead of the ballgame.

The Ashley Derrickson/Five Star Player of the Game on WKVI went to 5’9 Junior Abbie Tomblin who scored a game-high nineteen points (including one made three-pointer and hitting two out of three at the free-throw line), while also logging nine steals, and four rebounds in the winning effort!
