Senior Morris Will Be Argos Dragons’ Catalyst This Season
When evaluating the 2022-23 Argos High School boys basketball team, it’s no secret as senior big man J.J. Morris goes, so go the Dragons.
You see Morris is a handful on the hardwood.
He can beat you in a variety of ways.
First, his 6-foot-6 frame makes it extremely challenging for opposing teams to match up with.
He can score around the basket and on putbacks.
And don’t be fooled into thinking Morris is a one-dimensional offensive threat.
He has a nice outside shot, too, with the ability to even shoot from distance. So far this season Morris has knocked down 4-of-10 three-pointers.
Perhaps making No. 5 most lethal is his ability to put the ball on the floor and get to the rim, making life really difficult for the opposition.
Since Morris can score inside or outside, it’s no surprise that he’s once again leading the Dragons in scoring, averaging 20 points per game.
Morris, who also led Argos in scoring as a sophomore and junior, will become a 1,000-point scorer this season and will likely lead his team to as many, if not more, wins as it has had the previous two seasons with him as a starter.
Last season Argos finished 17-6, losing to Triton in the sectional championship. As a sophomore, Morris averaged 13.1 points.
In 2020-21, the Dragons went 18-6 and also had their season ended by Triton in the sectional title game. Morris averaged 16.1 points.
The MAX 98.3 FM sports crew got its first look at Argos on Friday night as they hosted West Central.
Argos prevailed 67-57, but the Trojans put up a good fight.
West Central senior guard Ayden White was spectacular. He poured in a game-high 30 points, scoring 22 in the second stanza. White displayed phenomenal range, connecting on three three-pointers from NBA range. He also was quick off the dribble and had a knack for finishing somehow, someway at or near the rim.
White’s teammate sophomore Bryce Nannenga had his moments, too. Twelve of his 16 points came in the final frame.
Argos had three players score in double figures, led by sophomore Luke Stults’ 21 points. Stults was really good around the basket as he tallied 10 first-quarter points.
Despite fouling out in the fourth quarter, Morris finished with 20 points. He only had one in the opening eight minutes and two in the final quarter, but went off in the second and third quarters.
Joining Stults and Morris in double figures was junior guard Sean Richard, who finished with 11 points.
We will be broadcasting 2-1 Argos again tonight as they head to LaVille to battle the 1-2 Lancers. You can listen to all the action on MAX 98.3 FM (WYMR) or via audio stream at max983.net. Our pregame coverage begins at about 7:10 p.m. ET with the game tipping at approximately 7:30 p.m.
