Post 27 claims state junior American Legion title

PLYMOUTH – What a way to start.

Plymouth’s Post 27 re-entered American Legion baseball with a bang winning a junior state title with a 12-0 win over Newburgh Post 44 on Sunday.

“It feels amazing,” said Post 27 coach Clayton Adamson. “To start the program up again after six years and have Plymouth win a state title is amazing.”

A little over a week ago the Diamond Spyders were having their struggles at the plate but found something scoring double digits through the state tournament.

“They just woke up I guess,” said Adamson. “They woke up and wanted to hit. We got out in the first inning and scored one or two runs every single game. That’s really important to get our starting pitching comfortable. The hitting was great all weekend.”

“When you get a rhythm going you don’t want to make that out.”

Trey Delp didn’t make many all weekend with another two-hit game, with another double, scoring two runs. Aiden Landis had a couple of hits and three RBIs.

Caleb Bowling helped himself with a pair of hits and RBIs.

Bowling earned the win for Post 27 giving up no hits in three shutout innings striking out three and walking one.

Caleb McCuen threw two innings of shutout relief for Post 27. He gave up two hits, striking out three and walking none.

All through the tournament Plymouth pitchers starting with a lead were able to settle in quickly being staked to a big lead.

“It can be hard, it gets in your head and you get too relaxed,” said Adamson. “We’ve had a few moments like that but I look back on the season and telling our pitchers, ‘Hey you have a defense behind you, you can throw strikes and work on some things but we just have to attack hitters. We did that all weekend.”

“They’ve been really good all year. We had seven or eight really good pitchers all year that we didn’t use,” said Adamson. “Jonas McCuen and Malachi (Sieh) and (Caleb) Bowling and Preston Wolfe were good all season long for us. Everybody else chipped in two or three innings at a time. That’s what got us here.”

Chad Mullinax took the loss for Newburgh Junior Legion Post 44.
