Post 27 comes from behind for a wild win
PLYMOUTH – It was a wild ride at the end but Plymouth Post 27 was able to hold on and take a win over South Bend Post 151 by a 3-2 final at Bill Nixon Field.
Trailing most of the game in a pitcher’s duel, Caleb Bowlings two out single driving home Jack Christiansen in the sixth gave the Diamond Spyders their first lead of the game.
Post 151 loaded the bases on Bowling in the seventh but Preston Wolfe came on to strike out the next two hitters.
That’s not the wild part.
On the second strikeout, Post 27 catcher Preston Jessen had the ball skip away far enough that the South Bend runner tried to score from third. Jessen recovered to flip the ball to Wolfe covering the plate in plenty of time to record the third out.
“That was crazy,” said Plymouth coach Clayton Adamson. “We had a couple of plays at the plate that were bang, bang right at the end there at home plate and fortunately they went our way.”
Post 151 had another chance for a run taken away at the plate in the fifth.
With the game tied at 2, a perfect throw from first baseman Tre Jordan to Jessen enabled him to make a sweeping tag of the South Bend runner again recording the third out at the plate.
The game was all pitching from start to finish. Plymouth starter Malachi Sieh had a rocky start walking three in the first and hitting a batter spotting Post 151 two runs.
Sieh quickly righted the ship sailing through the next two innings and ending the night with four strikeouts and just two hits in his three innings of work.
“I think maybe he might have needed that warm-up inning,” said Post 27 coach Clayton Adamson. “He’s been good all summer long and we have a lot of trust in him to start, relieve, close a game out, we have a lot of trust in him.”
Post 151 starter Griffiths was just as good going five innings striking out six and walking one with just two hits and two runs.
“We had that week off last week (IHSAA moratorium week) and the last couple of days a couple of guys showed up and get a couple of rounds (of batting practice) in,” said Adamson. “That’s kind of where we’re at trying to get some key hits. Bowling had a big hit for us and pitched well for us. Malachi pitched well and Preston came on to close it.”
“We have some solid arms, a couple of guys who didn’t pitch tonight,” said Adamson. “We’ll get them out there on Friday, and see what we can do Saturday.”
Bowling earned the win for Plymouth Post 27 giving up two hits and no runs over three innings, striking out three and walking four. Preston Wolfe collected the save.
Bowling, Kaden Milliser, and Jessen each drove in one run for Plymouth.
The Diamond Spyders are now 7-3 on the season.
