Instant Replay: Friday’s games the morning after in the words of the area coaches
Here is what the area coaches had to say about Friday night’s games on MAX 98.3’s Saturday morning “Coaches Show”.
SB RILEY 20, GLENN 0
Glenn head coach John Barron:
“They (SB Riley) play man coverage and they are in your face. Not only are their front six good but their safeties are good and they drop them down against the run. That being said it was a game that they threw three bombs in the first quarter. It was 20-0 after the first quarter and it was 20-0 final.”
“I think our kids got frustrated and I think when you start to lose confidence you get quieter up front and we didn’t talk as much. And it snowballed. When we were trying to get a rhythm and keep them off the field a little bit, we couldn’t do that.”
“It was a good game for us from the standpoint that I don’t know if we are going to play a more talented team. I hope we don’t. Their three linebackers are really good.”
“Our older guys need to lead. We don’t have time to feel sorry for ourselves. You look at the next five games we go to Angola, we go to a place called Jimtown who I think we are 3-53 against in school history. We go to Knox who won our sectional last year and beat us. We go to Bremen who we haven’t had a lot of success against and then we host Laville who’s beaten us four years in a row. It has to be one day at a time. Get better every day and you have to want to come to practice and work hard and enjoy the game because it doesn’t last very long.”
MISHAWAKA MARIAN 21, CMA 14
Culver Academy head coach Andy Dorrel:
“I was proud of our guys. We have a great team we just made way too many mistakes (against Marian) and did not make the strides week one to week two we were expecting.”
“We really emphasized this week taking care of the football and we turned it over three times. We gave up a special teams touchdown. We fumbled on special teams. When you go to Marian and play a very talented football team and let them get away from you it’s a little bit frustrating on Saturday morning.”
“You can’t afford to take any plays off. Two or three plays determine the outcome of the game.”
“Tay Rodriguez continues to be a workhorse for us (20 carries 75 yds, 4 rec., 96 yards). Defensively Henry Martello continues to make everybody around him better. Marian just had a couple of big plays that gave them momentum.”
“When they returned the kickoff for a touchdown. That was a momentum killer for us. We had the ball inside the 20 twice and got zero points.”
“After the game, we had seven juniors that you could tell were wearing it around their neck that they want to do better. That was our juniors. I’m not worried about our seniors. We have some great seniors. When you get your juniors to buy in and care as much as your seniors do then you are going to be fine.”
BREMEN 41, SB WASHINGTON 7
Bremen head coach Jordan Leeper:
“We were efficient on offense. They (Washington) packed the box to take away the run and Silas (Laidig) was able to find Ty (Graverson) and Reece (Greene) for some big gains and we punched them in the endzone.”
“He (Laidig) was calm, he was collected and he did the preparation coming into the game. He knew what Washington was trying to do and he delivered the ball where it needed to be.”
“They didn’t give us a chance to run the football. When you’re a lineman it’s really tough when you have eight guys sitting there in the box.”
“I like our commitment to each other. I think that they are buying into the team concept of defense and trusting the guys next to them. We have to embrace the grind of getting better every day.”
SOUTH CENTRAL 44, CULVER 22
Culver head coach Austin Foust:
“It was definitely a game of two halves. In the first half we had two turnovers. We lose one of our skill kids and we don’t have a lot of depth in our skill kids. Jack Rogers has 7 carries 106 yards in the first half and he goes down the rest of the game so we were down two skill kids, two linebackers and we were kind of makeshift offense and defense in the second half.”
“We thought we did some good things. Ethan Binion had 100 yards rushing. We had over 200 yards rushing. We thought we did some good things but we had some guys in different spots they weren’t used to.”
“(Friday night) our kids should have realized that no matter where they are on the depth chart they have a chance of getting on the field.”
“A lot of young guys are getting their first experience at what it’s truly like. Now they know that there is a chance they could get in every week.”
“Our kids were disappointed after the game. There was obviously some growth. We saw some o-lineman and d-lineman grow up right before our eyes. We just want to see that continue.”
LaVILLE 22, TRITON 16
LaVille head coach Jeff Kaiser:
“Triton is very talented. It’s not a secret if you want to stop them you have to stop number 2 (Cole Shively). We did some things defensively to try to get him out of rhythm and get him thinking. When an athlete thinks he slows down just a bit. It’s no secret that he can tear you apart.”
“It was one of those games of when are we going to get going? Triton gets after the football (on defense). Cody (Allen) finally found a seam. The line upfront opened some up for him. He came to play.”
“Honestly both sides of the ball we need to play as a unit. I don’t think we’ve jelled yet per se in playing as a solid unit. When we get there we are going to be very good, offensively and defensively.”
Triton head coach Zach Whitaker:
“We made a couple of crucial mistakes and we didn’t set ourselves up in a good position. We continued to fight so we were close. I’m proud of our effort.”
“They (LaVille) are very disciplined. Even when we did throw the ball they were always in a good position. We have to work on hitting our receivers when they are open, and maybe some timing on our passing game. We are trying to become a little more balanced. LaVille is just so well coached you just have to battle through what they give you.”
“You aren’t always going to get the outcome you want, that’s just part of the game. You have to control the things that you can. It’s effort and attitude with us and I couldn’t be more proud of that in our kids.”
“The biggest takeaway on this is that we can compete. I have a lot of respect for LaVille. I see them as one of the top dogs in 2A. That should give you some confidence that you can compete with anybody.”
“As long as we can continue to build and learn week in, week out we are going to be pretty good.”
COLUMBIA CITY 42, PLYMOUTH 14
Plymouth head coach Adam Handley:
“You can’t prepare your defense for what we saw on Friday night. You can run scout team all you want but until you see it full speed on Friday night you don’t know what you are going to get. That first (defensive) drive you saw that.”
“I think offensively we started okay. We knew already going into the game to compete with this team we had to score points. Right away we got the conversion on fourth down on the first drive. We thought we had the momentum and then we lost it on the first defensive drive.”
“If you tell me that we have over 200 yards of offense in the first quarter I tell you we are in the game but we had some inopportune mental lapses, penalties at inopportune times that cost us.”
“They (Columbia City) want your safeties and corners to follow all that eye candy (in the backfield) and when you do they throw it deep. It’s one of those Catch 22’s. You trust your safeties to be involved in the run game but you need them to not get beat deep.”
“We have to figure out what it was. Was there some schematic things that we had a mental breakdown? We have to figure out why we didn’t execute after a penalty. Was it a complete mental lapse of there’s a penalty now the drive is over? Was it that or was it poor play calling on our end? What was it? We’ll break that down and we’ll see what it looks like and have a better game plan.”
“We’re moving the ball now. We’ve got that figured out. Our offense is playing confident. We have to finish. We have to find a way to get in the endzone.”
