Big night ahead for Purdue’s Edey

Tonight will write another chapter in one of basketball’s greatest stories ever seen.

Purdue’s Zach Edey will hear his named called during the first round of the NBA Draft, which will be televised by ESPN beginning at 8 p.m.

Just getting drafted is nothing short of remarkable for the 7-foot-4 Edey.

The Toronto native will be the first player ever to be ranked in the 400s by recruiting services exiting high school/prep school who went on to become a two-time national college player of the year and be selected in the opening round of the NBA Draft.

Edey dominated college basketball the last two season in a way we haven’t seen in decades.

Tonight he is doing something unheard of, too.

Instead of accepting the NBA’s invitation as one of the 21 invitees to watch the Draft from the Green Room in New York, Edey will be watching the event from Purdue with his Boilermaker teammates, coaches and family.

Yep, Zach Edey is special, very special and I expect him to become quite the ambassador for his alma mater.

He often speaks about how grateful he is for the opportunity Matt Painter gave him and how much Purdue means to him.

Going forward Edey will be the face of Purdue basketball.

He is arguably the greatest Boilermaker ever. I can’t believe I’m saying that because Rick Mount and Glenn Robinson were incredible and always will be in the minds of the Purdue faithful.

But Big Zach leaves West Lafayette as the basketball program’s all-time leading scorer, doing the unthinkable this season by leading the Boilermakers to their first Final Four since 1980 and to their first appearance in the National Championship Game since 1969.

The pundits believe Edey will fall in the nine to 25 range in tonight’s Draft.

I just hope he lands with the team that is the perfect fit for his game.

So here’s to the Big Fella who busted his tail to get to where he his tonight. We will be watching and grinning ear to ear that yet again Big Maple has silenced all the critics.
