Say it ain’t true, midfield corporate logos coming to ND Stadium

Imagine a giant Meijer logo in the middle of Notre Dame Stadium’s field. How about DIRECTV, AT&T and Allstate logos on the ND FieldTurf, too?

No way? Think again.

As soon as this fall, you may in fact see corporate logos in the middle of fields at Notre Dame Stadium and on college football fields nationwide. Say what?

Today the NCAA approved a policy change to allow schools to place corporate logos in the middle of their football fields. This stems from the need to find new revenue streams in the aftermath of the House v. NCAA settlement agreement.

As part of that agreement, the NCAA and all 32 Division I conferences will pay some $2.8 billion in damages over a 10-year period. Plus, schools will be able to share up to $22 million annually with their athletes.

The approved settlement terms made by Power Five conferences, including Notre Dame, have resulted in gigantic financial concerns for said universities when a revenue-sharing model goes into effect, perhaps as early as the fall of 2025.

Schools may even have players’ jerseys feature sponsorship patches, like the ones starting to pop up in American professional sports, as yet another means to produce revenue.

With Name, Image and Likeness taking over the college landscape and the recent okay of student-athletes getting direct payment from their universities – becoming university employees – it appears that we are at a time where almost anything goes as far as ways schools are looking to increase revenue streams.

Boy, I can remember the days when Notre Dame said its football stadium would never feature anything other than natural grass and nothing would be painted on it in the end zones or at midfield. Needless to say, those days are long gone.

It seems like college athletic changes are happening at warp speed with no end in sight to the madness.
