PLYMOUTH — It was a renewal of the cross-county rivalry in soccer between Plymouth and Argos and it was Uriel Rebollo and the Rockies giving new head coach Jesus Jimenez Garcia his first career win by a 7-2 final.
Jimenez Garcia was just happy to get that first win out of the way.
“It feels amazing, especially after Monday,” he said. “We had a rough game we could have won but Bremen deserved it. It’s amazing to be able to get a win over our cross-county rivals at Argos.”
A big reason was a huge night from Rebollo with four goals in the game beating the Argos defense by just enough steps to get an open look at the net.
“He’s our senior striker and hopefully he’s going to be scoring a lot more,” said Jimenez-Garcia. “This is just a start for him, especially when we play the NLC teams, we are going to be relying a lot on him.”
“We got split too much, that was the start of it,” said Argos boss Todd VanDerWeele. “As we got behind we got a little desperate and our one one-on-one defending fell apart and instead of containing we were committing and letting them dribble around us. That’s something we are really going to have to work on in the next couple of days.”
The Dragons in game one did a lot of things well tying the score quickly after the Plymouth opening score but struggled at the end of the first half giving up three goals. The Plymouth defense was stout on the night protecting goalies Wyatt Houin and Jacob Aguilar allowing just three shots on goal.
“After they tied us we were a little iffy, but we locked down on defense,” said Jimenez-Garcia. “Our defense is our biggest strength this year. We have three seniors back there and they are going to be leading us when we play teams like Warsaw and Goshen. They are going to have to lock them down, hopefully with no goals instead of two but I’m proud of them tonight.”
“We had some good attacks but we were playing in space too much,” said VanDerWeele. “Basically we just ran ourselves into the ground and we know better than that. We just made too many errors. We’ve been a little sloppy at times and every time we get sloppy we get punched. We weren’t sloppy all night long but just at certain times like the end of the first half and it killed us.”
Ethan Petz had the first Argos goal and Keagan Stanley added one right after the break but it was all the Dragons could muster.
Meanwhile, Plymouth was able to take good advantage of 14 shots on freshman keeper Angelo McMillen.
“We feel good, we play LaPorte on Monday, and on Thursday we have Warsaw coming to town,” said Jimenez-Garcia. “They are ranked so it’s going to be a great challenge. I’m super proud of these guys. They’ve been working super hard at practice and I think it shows.”
Plymouth now stands at 1-1 on the young season with Argos at 0-1.
