MAX Game of the Week Recap: Bremen gets much needed victory over ranked Triton
Sixth-ranked Triton entered its second game of the season riding high after beating ranked LaVille in its opener, while Bremen had its confidence rattled with a loss at East Noble to kick off the 2024 season.
Even though it was just Game No. 2, the senior-laden Lions were definitely in need of a victory.
“Our guys came out and handle adversity this week,” said Bremen head coach Jordan Leeper, whose team improved to 1-1 on the young season.
Bremen’s defense would be the story in this one.
The Lion D caused five turnovers, all interceptions as Triton turned to two quarterbacks – Ben McFarland and Gage Riffle – to try to generate some offense, but to no avail.
Just like in the opener, Triton managed just one pass completion, which came on its first attempt.
“On D, we owned the line of scrimmage,” Leeper said. “Our guys pinned their ears back and really got after it.”
After the start of the game was delayed by lightening, offense was tough to come by.
Triton got the only first down of the first quarter and Bremen started the second quarter with an impressive nine-play, 59-yard scoring drive.
The Lions scored the game’s first points when quarterback Silas Laidig connected with his favorite target receiver Ty Graverson, who made his typical impressive catch at the goal line. The PAT was good and the hosts led 7-0 with 7:31 to play in the first half.
Graverson’s catch would turn out to be our MAX Play of the Game.
On the ensuing kickoff, Bremen surprised everyone when Graverson tried an onside kick. The Lion star recovered it.
Although Bremen had all the momentum and the ball in Triton territory, its surprise move didn’t lead to any points. It tried a 47-yard field goal, but it was way short.
Even though the Lions didn’t increase their lead, they did control the clock. Triton’s offense didn’t touch the ball until eight minutes had expired in the second quarter.
“We controlled the ball and the line of scrimmage, which really dictated how we called the game,” Leeper said.
Bremen looked as though it would go into the locker room at halftime with a 7-0 lead, but Laidig was hit on a corner blitz and fumbled. The Trojans recovered and were in business at the Lion 15.
However, Bremen’s defense held and Triton had to settle for a 27-yard field goal by Dante Workman with 5.8 seconds to go in the opening half.
Bremen built on its 7-3 halftime advantage when Graverson intercepted Riffle’s pass with just over seven minutes to play in the third quarter.
The Lions turned the pick into seven points by driving 45 yards on 10 plays using 5:21 of the clock. Senior running back Austin Young’s 2-yard touchdown plunge and the successful PAT made it a 14-3 ballgame.
The Trojans’ next possession again ended with Riffle’s pass being picked off. This time it was junior defensive back Jack Wildouer with the pick at the Lion 32.
Triton’s next possession ended with a turnover on downs at its 23 with just 4:33 to go in the game.
Bremen finished the scoring when Laidig connected with senior William Stiles for a 15-yard touchdown pass play at the 2:22 mark.
Stiles made his presence felt on defense as he tied for team-high honors with nine tackles.
Bremen senior running back Carson Anderson ran for 114 yards on 25 carries.
Laidig finished the night 6-for-13 passing for 50 yards and a touchdown.
Triton returns to action tonight when it hosts 1-1 Culver Community. Bremen will also be action tonight as it hosts 0-2 Osceola Grace.
MAX TRITON PLAYER OF THE GAME: RB Jayden Overmyer 18 carries =70 yds.
MAX BREMEN PLAYER OF THE GAME: Graverson 9 tackles, 2 INT, 1 TD reception
