MAX Game of the Week Recap: Knox runs over Glenn, 26-7
Knox — It was far from a secret that Knox would run, run and run a lot against Glenn Friday night at Community Field.
The visiting Falcons knew it and their defense did a good job in the first quarter slowing the Redskins’ vaunted running attack down.
The problem? As the game wore on, Knox just wore Glenn’s D down.
After rushing for 34 yards on 11 carries in the opening 12 minutes, Knox’s two-headed monster of senior Jake Conroy and junior Myles McLaughlin proved to be too much for the Falcons in the Redskins’ 26-7 win on Homecoming
The two running backs combined for 273 yards rushing and four touchdowns.
McLaughlin accounted for 171 yards on 24 carries and three scores, while Conroy also eclipsed the century mark on the ground with 102 yards on 22 attempts.
McLaughlin’s three touchdowns ran his high school career total to 80, a Knox scoring record. In addition, he’s just 50 yards away from yet another 1,000-yard rushing season. McLaughlin has rushed for more than 5,000 yards in his career. Next up 6,000 yards. Amazing to say the least!
The victory was Knox’s second straight league victory to improve its overall record to 3-2 on the season (2-0 in the Indiana Northern State Conference).
Glenn fell for the third straight time, dropping to 1-3.
Knox led 14-7 at half and made it a two-score game on the second half’s first play from scrimmage.
For the first time in the game, the Redskins lined a couple receivers out wide to the right. The strategy worked as it spread Glenn’s defense out and got McLaughlin in space. The result? A 90-yard touchdown run off tackle for the All-Stater. The two-point try failed, but Knox led 20-7 just 33 seconds into the third quarter.
On its next possession, Glenn committed its third turnover of the game – an interception – and the Falcons wouldn’t see the ball again until the fourth quarter.
That’s because Knox went on an 18-play, 81-yard touchdown drive that chewed an amazing 10:30 off of the play clock.
Conroy’s 3-yard scoring run with just under 10 minutes to play would be the game’s final tally.
Knox dominated time of possession, 36:32-23:38.
Late in the first half, Glenn turned to backup quarterback reshman Archer Rust to try and generate some offense
He responded by completing back-to-back passes for gains of 34 and 14 yards, giving the Falcons the ball deep in Knox territory.
Glenn made it a one-score game when Falcon starting quarterback Braydn Benwell scored from a yard out with just under 30 seconds remained in the half.
The PAT got the Falcons within 14-7 heading into the locker room.
Two big Glenn mistakes in the opening half led to both of scores for Knox.
After a scoreless first quarter, Glenn tried to fool the hosts with a fake punt at the Knox 39, but a poor snap to the up back was recovered by the Redskins at their 47.
Eight plays later Knox took a lead that it would never relinquish when McLaughlin scored on an 11-yard scamper. At the time, it was his longest play from scrimmage in the contest.
Glenn committed its second turnover of the first half on its next possession.
Knox got great penetration from its defensive line and hit Anthony McGuigan right when he got the handoff. He fumbled and Knox recovered at the Glenn 17.
Four plays later and McLaughtlin was in the end zone again, plunging in from two yards out. He converted the two-point play to make it 14-0.
The game was rather sloppy.
The two teams combined for 16 penalties and Glenn committed three turnovers, while Knox didn’t turn the ball over.
Next up for the Falcons will be another conference game as they’ll host 2-3 Bremen Friday.
Knox, on the other hand, will look to remain unbeaten in the Northern State Conference when it hosts 2-3 LaVille on Friday.
