BOURBON — A solid win over Pioneer a week ago has made a statement about a football program at Triton that is ready to take its place among the elite.
“I couldn’t be more proud of our kids,” said Triton’s Rodney Younis. “They are a resilient group. They’ve prepared for these games and they stuck together as a unit. They put aside individual accomplishments and focused on the team. It was a complete team win. We played well as a unit.”
“The biggest change is moving to the Hoosier North Conference has allowed us to play against teams that are the same as us size-wise,” said Younis. “It has evened the playing field. Our kids have worked for this. It isn’t something that happened overnight. It is something that was built and now it’s something that we want to keep moving in the right direction.”
The biggest challenge to the week is fall break which kills a team’s regimen.
“The biggest challenge is keeping them on a routine,” said Younis. “We are keeping our practice schedule the same because of our ‘lay’ coaches (who have jobs outside of education) they were joking the other day that their routine hasn’t changed at all. So as far as that aspect we are status quo but everybody deals with it and it is what it is.”
Another traditional powerhouse in football North Miami will be this week’s opponent. Coming in 6-2 on the year they will sport an option attack.
“As a fan of football, they are fun to watch,” said Younis. “As a coach competing against them, they are not. They are very balanced. Offensively they have four weapons who statistically have done very well this year. They are a complete team. This is going to be a big game for us and it’s going to be a battle and a possible sectional opponent.”
The keys to a win for the Trojans are pretty much the same as always.
“Always taking care of the football,” said Younis. “We can’t give them extra possessions. We have to be disciplined on defense. They have multiple weapons and their option attack is very good. We have to keep ourselves in the right position to make plays and trust our teammates that they are doing their jobs as well.”
