PLYMOUTH — Tuesday night, the Marian Ancilla Men’s Basketball team played at Charger Arena for the first time this season, and an offensive outburst in their 113-63 win against Bethel University’s Junior Varsity team gave fans a glimpse at the potential of this year’s team.
The Chargers were solid, not spectacular, in the first half as they built a 48-31 advantage at the intermission, but Head Coach Aaron Butcher knew there was work to be done. “We didn’t defend with the edge we needed to in the first half, and we settled for too many 3-pointers on the offensive end.” After some quick adjustments, they returned to the floor on a mission.
Marian Ancilla came out much more aggressive defensively and more disciplined offensively, assembling a 65-32 second half margin that might mirror other teams’ entire games. “I thought in the second half we defended at a high level and were aggressive taking the ball to the basket, which allowed us to pull away,” added Coach Butcher.
Freshman Jordan Woods came through with another double-double, scoring 18 points and collecting 10 rebounds. He added 7 assists and 5 steals for good measure. Fellow Freshman Matt King led all scorers with 26 points on 11-14 shooting, plus he added 6 rebounds and 5 assists. The bench once again came up huge, scoring 47 points collectively. Redshirt Freshman Kenneth Grant led their efforts with 19 points, including knocking down 4 triples.
The Men’s Basketball team takes a couple of days off before returning to action this Saturday afternoon when they travel to Montcalm Community College. Tip time is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
