DONALDSON — Saturday afternoon, the Marian Ancilla Women’s Basketball team returned home for the first time since November 2nd, this time hosting Montcalm Community College. The Chargers and Centurions just faced each other on November 15th, with the Chargers winning at Montcalm, 83-60. This time, it was a little more one-sided, as Marian Ancilla outscored Montcalm 72-25 over the final three quarters to post a 90-37 victory.
The Chargers scored the first 5 points of the game, but they were just 3-8 from the free-throw line during that stretch, so they couldn’t quite pull away. After a pair of 3-pointers and some back & forth, the Centurions took their only lead at 10-7. Marian Ancilla used an 11-2 run to finish the first quarter with an 18-12 lead.
Over the next three quarters, the Chargers utilized tremendous defense, forcing 27 turnovers overall and collecting 18 steals in the meantime. Their ability to get out in transition helped spur the offense, and they showed great selflessness, assisting on 24 of their 34 made field goals.
Freshman guard Annika Davis led all scorers with 18 points, and she collected 7 rebounds for the Chargers in victory. Fellow Freshmen Aaliyah Keil (13 points, 7 rebounds, 4 steals, 3 assists) and Santana Eubanks (13 points, 4 rebounds, 5 steals, 2 assists, 2 blocked shots) each played well-rounded games. Sophomore wing Bella Mahan came off the bench to score 12 points on four made 3-pointers, while the bench in total was great, contributing 32 points, 19 rebounds, and 15 of the 24 assists.
Also of note, this game marked the first action of the season for Sophomore All-MCCAA wing De’Mour Watson. De’Mour injured her knee back on January 29th at Southwestern Michigan and hadn’t played since. Saturday, she returned to play 12 minutes, she was 3-6 from the field for 6 points, but she led the team in assists with 5, and she collected 4 caroms as well.
Marian Ancilla Women’s Basketball doesn’t get much of a break, as they return to action Tuesday evening at Olive-Harvey College in Chicago. The Panthers defeated Lake County yesterday, 69-63, moving to 8-0 on the year, so it will be a battle of the unbeatens, with the Chargers needing your support. Tipoff is set for 6:30 p.m. ET/5:30 p.m. CT,
