Lady Chargers pull away for the win
PLYMOUTH — For the final time in 2024, the Marian University Ancilla Women’s Basketball team took the floor Saturday afternoon in a matchup with the Cuyahoga Community College Triceratops taking a 71-34 win.
The Triceratops proved to be a tough defensive team early, as the Chargers struggled through turnovers. Once they adjusted to the different defenses and pressure, Marian Ancilla was able to stretch out a victory to close the first semester.
Scoring was tough for both teams early on. Marian Ancilla primarily continued its strong halfcourt defensive approach it has utilized all year, while Tri-C went with a variety of defenses, causing the Chargers to turn it over and miss a lot of easy shots around the rim in the first half. Still, the Chargers were able to force several turnovers early, get out in transition, and build a 31-13 halftime lead.
In the third quarter, Marian outscored Cuyahoga 24-6 period to claim a 36-point lead. All 12 Chargers were able to see quality minutes, and they closed the game with several reserves making big plays.
All in all, freshman guard Aaliyah Keil stole the ball six times, helping to create offense, as she tied for the game-high of 15 points. Fellow freshman guard Annika Davis buried three 3-pointers in the second half, as she also contributed 15 points. Sophomore guard Nasiya Gause played a nice all-around game, chipping in 8 points, nine rebounds, three assists, and two steals on the afternoon.
Head Coach Ryan Gould was happy with the team’s focus
“This week, we very easily could have been disinterested,” he said. “We took a week off because of finals, returned to three games this week, and we played with great effort each game. We still have some fine-tuning to do because we need to clean up some of our turnovers, but altogether, we have come together nicely as a unit.”
The Chargers are now 11-1 on the season and have been scratching at the door of the Top 25 poll, receiving votes each of the last few weeks.
