Defense revs up in Lady Chargers win

BENTON HARBOR — The Marian University Ancilla Women’s Basketball team continued their outstanding season Saturday afternoon when they headed to Benton Harbor, Michigan, to take on the Lake Michigan Red Hawks. In a game that started out a little rough, it turned out to be a powerful defensive performance by the Chargers, leading to a 69-39 victory.
From the very beginning, freshman Santana Eubanks set the tone with a steal on the opening possession, only to be fouled hard on her layup attempt, forcing an intentional foul to be called. Immediately, all of the Chargers locked in, played great defense, collected 14 steals (Eubanks had seven steals), and out-rebounded Lake Michigan 44-42.
Leading the way for Marian Ancilla was Sophomore De’Mour Watson. The 5-10 wing scored 20 points, she pulled down 7 rebounds, and she added a pair of assists to her scorecard. Freshman guard Annika Davis (15 points) joined Eubanks (10 points) and Watson in double-figure scoring. 6-3 Freshman post Jadyn Harris led all rebounders with 11, including 5 she pulled down at the offensive end of the floor. Freshman guard Karleisha Echols and Sophomore wing Bella Mahan topped the assist column with 3 apiece.
The Chargers are nearing the end of their regular season. Saturday’s win puts them at 24-4 overall and 10-3 in the MCCAA Western Division. They have one more regular season game before they turn to postseason play, and that will be this Tuesday, February 25th, at the LifePlex in Plymouth. Tip time is set for 5:30 p.m. From there, they will also host the first round of the NJCAA Division II Great Lakes District A Championship. That game will take place on Tuesday, March 4th, matching up for a third time against Kalamazoo Valley.
