MUAC men split weekend, but clinch playoff spot

GRAND RAPIDS — Following a tough loss on Friday at Lansing Community College, the Marian University Ancilla Men’s Basketball team had to turn around and play again Saturday at Grand Rapids Community College and in an up-and-down game, the Chargers did what they needed to do in order to secure the 92-84 victory and clinch a spot for postseason play in 2 1/2 weeks.

The Men’s team is now 19-7 overall on the season and 8-3 in MCCAA Western Division play currently in second place in the division.
As for their matchup with Grand Rapids, Marian Ancilla had to battle through a back-and-forth game to eventually pull away and seal it during the late moments of the second half. Additionally, the Chargers got big outputs from somewhat unexpected sources. For the season, guard Kenneth Grant and front-liner Davione Doty are averaging 8.3 points and 4.2 points per game, respectively but Saturday afternoon, the two combined for just over half (47 points) of the team’s point total.
Grant was 7-13 from long range against Grand Rapids, scoring 21 points in a reserve role. The 6-foot-8 Doty has also shown flashes throughout the year, but his 26-point, 12-rebound performance against GRCC was by far his best game of the season.
Adding to what Grant and Doty were able to accomplish, freshman guard Jordan Woods continued his strong season, scoring 22 points and handing out seven assists, while sophomore wing Dante Porch added a double-double of 10 points and 14 rebounds off the bench.
With three games remaining in their regular season, the Chargers will return to the court Wednesday evening when they host Kalamazoo Valley Community College at 7:30 p.m. at the LifePlex in Plymouth in a game you can hear on MAX 98.3. KVCC is currently 11-0, 24-1 overall ranked seventh in the nation.
