Lady Cavaliers Out Duel The Lady Knights

Yet another exciting night provided by Culver Community High School, compliments of the Culver Lady Cavaliers! In a rollercoaster ride of a season, which the Lady Cavs are currently in the middle of, the last two outings for the ladies in orange and black have seen momentum shift in their favor. After getting a huge 60-57 win over New Prairie in the consolation round of the Teachers Credit Union Bi-County Tournament, it would be easy to think that the Lady Cavs could have a let down in their next outing, having spent so much physical and emotional energy in that big win. The first half would appear to display the letdown in full effect, as Culver would enter the locker room at halftime trailing Covenant Christian by nine, 29-20.

The Lady Cavaliers, however, would emerge from the locker room, a brand new, re-energized team! After the first half, in which Junior Madi Shedrow would carry the scoring load, putting up 10 of Culver’s 20 first half points, it would be Senior teammate Alex Temme who would help the Lady Cavaliers get over the hurdle. The 5’8 Senior forward would end up scoring 17 of her game-high 22 points in the final two quarters, with her teammates making a clear effort to feed her the ball in the post. The bulk of the ball handling duties would come from the “law firm” of Binkley and Binkley, as Kenzie and Baleigh would be seen with the ball in their hands much of the time with Covenant Christian continuing to turn up the heat on the defensive end of the floor.

In what might have been the biggest moment in the game, a technical foul was called on a player from Covenant Christian, after a foul had been called. Had only the foul been called, Temme would have had just two free throw attempts, but with the two technical foul free throws, the Senior was able to knock down three out of four, with just 21.3 seconds left to give Culver the lead at 55-54. In a somewhat surprising move by Covenant Christian, they would not play a denial defense to try and prevent Culver from getting the ball in bounds. So without trouble, the Lady Cavaliers were able to inbound the ball to Shedrow, who was able to stand with the ball in her hands for a few seconds before bringing it across half court. The Lady Knights would be able to create a deflection to force a turnover, but were unable to get a shot off, giving Culver the one-point win in regulation, to bring their season record back to .500 at 10-10!

Following the game, an exhausted Head Coach, Tammy Shedrow, still had enough energy to conduct her postgame interview with a smile that we tend to only see in toothpaste commercials.

“Honestly, I don’t even know who scored for us” Shedrow said following the win. “It was a great team effort tonight. Just a tremendous effort from all the girls tonight”.

The Ashley Derrickson/Five Star Player of the Game on WKVI went to Alex Temme, who scored a game-high 22 points, hitting 10-12 at the free-throw line, while also pulling down 4 steals. The Senior also had the Starke County Co-Op Play of the Game, as her final free throws put the Lady Cavs over the edge in the close victory.
