Shiver Me Timbers! Lady Redskins Improve to 17-0 After Win Over Lady Pirates!

It was a win the Lady Redskins would have to earn, as the Merrillville Lady Pirates would be relentless on both ends of the court from start to finish. The first quarter proved to be a bit of a struggle for both teams as the pace of the game was something that would have Indy Racing fans drooling, with the Lady Redskins and Lady Pirates flying up and down the floor! As the dust settled at the end of the first quarter, the two extremely athletic teams would be at a stalemate, with the score knotted at twelve.

The Lady Redskins would then start to put some distance between themselves and the Lady Pirates, as they would outscore Merrillville 25-10 in the second quarter to take a 37-22 lead at halftime. Junior star Remi Jordan, who would also be seen running the point at times throughout the night, would lead all scorers with 17 first half points. As is usually the case with the Lady Redskins, it would not be a one-woman show in the scoring column. At game’s end, the ‘Skins would have three individuals scoring in double-digits. In addition to Jordan’s game-high 23 points, Fellow Junior Felicity Olejniczak would put up 19, followed by Freshman Riley Messer who added 12.

It would be on the defensive end where both teams would shine. Throughout the game, a tremendous amount of athleticism would be on display as the Lady Redskins and Lady Pirates would combine for 28 steals, with many of those steals turning into points at the other end of the floor. The Redskins would, at times, showcase a lineup which included 6’0 Junior Remi Jordan, 6’0 Sophomore Brianna Korcha, and 6’1 Sophomore Megan Bolen on the top part of their zone defense. Jordan would end up leading Knox in the steal’s category as she snagged 5 throughout the game, while Olejniczak would find 4, and Junior Preston Minix would come up with 3. A prime example of the kind of athleticism the Lady Redskins were facing would be seen in the rebounding category, as Merrillville out rebounded Knox 25-23. Not surprisingly, Jordan would be the leader for Knox in this category as well, as she pulled down 10 rebounds to round out her double-double for the night.

Once again, Head Coach Neill Minix and his Lady Redskins have turned more skeptics into believers, as the Knox Girls Basketball program has won their school record 17th straight game, with the win over 4A Merrillville acting as a type of exclamation mark. The win showed the Redskin faithful, as well as Redskin opponents, the Lady Redskins are not paying attention to critics or rankings. Coach Minix and his squad are zeroing in on one opponent at a time. While it is easy for those of us on the outside looking in to think things such as “What if?” or “Can they?”, Minix, his staff, his players, and his school, simply go about their business, not getting overly excited, nor overly upset. It is a matter of focus for the Lady Redskins, and at 17-0, the focus now turns to the possibility of 18-0. Up next…the Winamac Lady Warriors on Friday!
