Lady Redskins Move To 4-0 After Convincing Home Win!

Knox Defeats LaCrosse In Girls Basketball

Neill Minix’s Lady Redskins got off to an incredibly fast start at Weinberg Gym Saturday night, on their way to the fourth win of the young season. It would be the defense of the Lady ‘Skins that would provide the early spark, as they would force the young Lady Tigers of LaCrosse into twelve turnovers in the first quarter. Many of the turnovers forced by the Knox zone defense would result in points on the other end, allowing the Lady Redskins to jump out to a 25-0 lead at the end of the first quarter.

6’0 Senior Remi Jordan would handle the bulk of the first half scoring for Knox, as her teammates were making a concerted effort to pound the ball inside, against the vertically challenged Lady Tigers. Jordan would drop thirteen of her game-high twenty points in the first half, with many of those points coming on the block, as well as the free throw line. It would not be a one-woman show in the scoring column, however, as the Lady ‘Skins would see another six individuals put up at least two points in the first half. The defensive end of the floor would continue to work to the benefit of Knox, as they relentlessly picked the pockets of the Lady Tigers with the first half moving on. LaCrosse, however, would calm down significantly as the game progressed, playing the veteran Lady Redskins much closer in the final three quarters.

The second quarter would see LaCrosse get into the scoring column against a difficult zone defense presented by Knox. Kaylee Welkie and Miranda Wozniak would provide the scoring in the second quarter for the Lady Tigers. While the Lady Redskins still outscored the Lady Tigers, it would be by a much closer margin, as Knox would put up fourteen points compared to LaCrosse’s eight, to put the score at 39-8 at the intermission. Knox’s Felicity Olejniczak and Preston Minix would provide sparks in the first half scoring for Knox, with the two veterans posting eight and six points, respectively.

The second half would be nearly a carbon copy of the first, as Knox would continue to remain focused on defense, taking the ball away from LaCrosse another fourteen times in the final two quarters. In all, the Lady Redskins would log twenty-three steals in the ballgame, many of which would result in points scored on the offensive end of the floor. Knox would continue to execute extremely well on offense as they would explode for twenty more points in the third quarter, outscoring LaCrosse 20-3, on their way to a 59-11 lead heading into the final quarter of play. In that fourth quarter, the Lady Tigers would see their best offensive output of the game as they outscored Knox 12-7 in the final eight minutes. Not coincidentally, LaCrosse saw their best scoring output in the second and fourth quarters, when they committed just five and six turnovers, respectively.

The Starke County Co-Op Play of the Game on WKVI came at the end of the first quarter, on a steal and a basket by Knox Senior Felicity Olejniczak, as time ran out in the first quarter to give Knox a 25-0 lead.

The Ashley Derrickson/Five Star Player of the Game on WKVI went to Knox Senior Remi Jordan. Jordan scored a game-high twenty points, putting up thirteen in the first half, with seven coming in the second. She also pulled down a game-high fourteen rebounds, to go along with a steal, and a perfect effort at the free throw line, going eight for eight!
