Plymouth Sophomore Turning Heads Early

Looking for breakout sophomores early on this girls high school basketball season?

Well, look no further than Plymouth Pilgrims’ sophomore guard Lena Jones, who is off to a good start and as a result, people are taking notice.

Last week MAX 98.3 FM broadcasted a pair of Jones’ games – at Bremen and at Triton.

All the point guard did in those two contests was pour in 32 points, including a career-high 23 in the 10-point win over the Lions.

In the two games, Jones, who wears jersey No. 5 this season, hit four three-pointers and went 8-of-9 from the free throw line.

Twenty of Jones’ game-high 23 points against Bremen came in the final three quarters.

It was one of those nights where you thought everything that left her hand was going in.

A performance like that was exactly what second-year coach Micaela Schallio was hoping for from her young floor general.

Currently for the 2-4 Pilgrims, Jones is the team’s third-leading scorer (6.3 points per game), second-leading rebounder (5.2) and leading the way in assists (2.3). She is knocking down 36 percent of her triples, good for second-best on the squad, and she’s third on the team in overall shooting (hitting 40 percent of her attempts). In addition, Jones is the team’s best free throw shooter, hitting 91 percent of her freebies.

It seems the only thing slowing Jones down is a lack of confidence, but obviously that was far from the case against the Lions.

Going forward it is imperative Plymouth has a confident Jones.

Senior Taylor Delp is the catalyst of the team, but the 6-foot post player needs some of her teammates to step up, particularly on the offensive end.

If Jones can be consistent enough to where she’s hovering around double digit scoring nights, Plymouth will have a solid one-two inside-outside punch.

The aforementioned is a necessity when you look at what lies ahead for Jones and Delp’s team.

After hosting Logansport tonight, the Pilgrims will embark on a five-game road trip to start December.

Facing such a gauntlet of a schedule will be challenging to say the least and Plymouth will need contributions from many if it is to navigate through it successfully. No doubt though, the emergence of Jones has been a very encouraging development for the Pilgrim faithful especially considering the season is just three weeks old.
