Post 27 glides to win over Portage Post 430
PLYMOUTH – Plymouth’s Post 27 Spyders took command and sailed to a win over Portage Post 430 at Bill Nixon Field by a 7-2 final.
Plymouth blew open a tightly played ball game in the fifth to seal the win.
Plymouth starter Preston Wolfe was in charge in his three innings of work striking out six of the nine batters he faced in three innings of work, giving up no hits, throwing just 34 pitches, and allowing just one baserunner who reached on an error.
Caleb Bowling came on in the fourth and got out of a bases-loaded jam in the fifth, not surrendering a run. Jake McCuen was touched for two in his one-inning stint but Parker Wolfe came on to throw up another zero in the seventh.
“Caleb came in (for Preston Wolfe) and did a great job,” said Plymouth coach Ryan Wolfe. “Overall I thought our pitching was pretty solid.”
Post 430 starter Isaac Mendoza matched the Plymouth pitchers until the fifth surrendering just one run on just four hits, striking out three. A pair of costly errors in the fifth would be Portage’s undoing.
“I think the guy kept us off balance early,” said Wolfe of Mendoza. “He wasn’t throwing real hard but the second time through the order we put some balls in play and made some things happen.”
“It’s one of those where you don’t see that all the time and you get out in front with a lot of flyballs,” he said. “I thought the second and third time through we did alright.”
Plymouth took advantage of those Portage errors to plate six runs, the big blow a two-run single by Preston Jessen. Preston Wolfe and Austin Price also had RBIs for the Spyders.
“It was one of those games where you say you have to get some things rolling and I thought pitching kept us where we needed to be, put some zeroes up on the board,” said Wolfe. “I was hoping our offense would come around there and they did.”
Plymouth will be in action again on Sunday.
