Culver hoops has new leader

The Culver High School boys basketball program will usher in a new era for the 2024-25 season as Drew Mosson has been as its 20th head basketball coach.

Mosson takes the reins from Kyle Evans, who announced last month that he would be joining Marian University Ancilla College’s men’s basketball program as an assistant coach.

Mosson inherits a program that is coming off of a 9-14 season and hasn’t had a winning season since 2016-17. Culver’s last sectional championship came in 2013-14 when it went 16-8 and fell in the regional to North White, 70-69 in overtime.

Mosson has plenty of high school assistant coaching experience on the boys side having stints at Triton, Argos and Peru among other schools, but this will be his first boys basketball head coaching position. The 2013 Triton High School graduate was the Madison-Grant girls basketball head coach in 2021-22 (12-11 record).

Mosson’s name is a familiar one within Indiana high school basketball coaching circles.

His father, Gordon, amassed 472 career wins in 32 seasons, which is one of the highest win totals in IHSAA history. Gordon Mosson was the head coach at John Glenn from 1982-2007 and at Argos from 2014-21.

His son takes over a Cavalier program that plays in the revamped Hoosier North Athletic Conference along with Argos, Caston, North Judson, Oregon-Davis, Pioneer, Triton and Winamac.

The Cavaliers will also have to navigate through a new-look sectional in Class 1A thanks to the IHSAA’s latest sectional alignments that were released this spring. Culver will see Trinity Greenlawn, South Central, Elkhart Christian, Oregon-Davis, Triton, Argos and North Judson in Sectional 51.

Mosson will have to replace 2023-24 leading scorer Jack Rodgers (20.3 points per game). Rodgers also led the Cavaliers in rebounding and assists. Culver’s top-returning scorer is David Hite (11.3).
