Purdue’s Card 1 of just 2 Big Ten QBs on Manning Watch List
Second-year Purdue head football coach Ryan Walters has called his offense “explosive” during training camp, which no doubt means Texas transfer quarterback Hudson Card must be turning some heads during Boilermaker practices.
Card will be entering his second season in West Lafayette and his second as the Old Gold and Black’s starting signal caller.
Not only does Walters see the signs of improvement necessary for Purdue to surprise, but apparently pundits are picking up on the potential of the 6-foot-3, 210-pound Austin, Texas, native.
This week Card has been named to the watch lists for both the Manning Award and the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award.
He is one of only two Big Ten quarterbacks to be named to the Manning Award, joining Drew Allar of Penn State.
A total of 29 quarterbacks were named to the Manning Award Watch List.
Card hopes to lead Purdue to a great comeback season in 2024 after the Boilermakers were injury-riddled in ’23 and limped to a 4-8 record.
Other than the win over Indiana in the Old Oaken Bucket game, the highlight of the season had to come in a thrilling win at Virginia Tech.

The Manning Award is given in honor of the college football accomplishments of Archie, Peyton and Eli Manning.
Card is looking to improve on a junior season that saw him rank third in the Big Ten in passing in yards per game and completions per game.
He threw for 2,387 yards with 15 touchdowns over 11 starts, while also recording 203 yards and five touchdowns on the ground en route to earning All-Big Ten Honorable Mention accolades.
In the season finale against the Hoosiers, Card accounted for 360 yards of total offense (275 passing, 85 rushing) and four touchdowns (three passing, one rushing) to become the first quarterback since Drew Brees (2000) to pass for at least 275 yards and rush for at least 85 yards in the same game. For his performance, he became the Manning Award Star of the Week.
Against Syracuse, Card went 32-for-46 for 323 yards and a touchdown to set career highs in completions, attempts and yards.
Card will have to be much improve and so will his Boilermakers to navigate through one of the most difficult schedules in all of college football.
Purdue kicks things off Aug. 31 against Indiana State in Ross-Ade Stadium.
