CULVER — Culver’s Cavs showed their mettle a week ago, coming back to take a first-round sectional win over South Central after losing to the Satellites the week before.
“Our response was really good,” said Culver coach Austin Foust. “We felt like we let one slip away the week before. Our kids came out right away Ethan Binion came right out on the first play and I feel like that kind of set the tone for the whole game.”
South Central didn’t go away getting back to within one score early on.
“It went to 14-8, and you could see our kids hang their heads a little bit,” said Foust. “But on the kickoff, Tony Summers took it 85 yards to the house, and just the way our kids celebrated, it was a sigh of relief. Right after that, David Hite had a beautiful onside kick. It wasn’t a called thing, but we had worked it all week, and it was an ‘if they give you a certain look’ kind of thing. He saw it and thought he could get it.”
“We preach to our kids to not be that guy who’s waiting around for somebody to make a play, go make it yourself,” said Foust. “Tony did that, and it got us rolling.
The coach was also pleased with his team’s execution.
“Three of our four touchdown passes were on fourth down,” said Foust. “That execution is something that’s been missing a little bit all year. It’s a testament to our kids that they wanted to come out and change that.”
For their reward, the Cavs get to face what many consider the best team in 1A in North Judson.
“They have things at every position that you’d like to have,” said Foust. “You like to have big linemen. They have that. You like to have big linemen that are strong. They have that. You want skilled kids that are athletic and fast and by the way, can you make them strong too? They’ve got that. This is their class, this is the group that they really expected to get to Lucas Oil.”
“We’ve challenged our kids that they beat us 70 to nothing the first time we played, but are they really 70 points better than us?” said Foust. “We have a chance to change that. Last time, we gave up four touchdowns on big plays, 60 (yards) or plus. Those were things that we blew a coverage or didn’t make a tackle. There are some things that we can do to not make it easy on them.”
