Lady Chargers earn split in MCCAA opener

DONALDSON — Friday afternoon, the Marian University Ancilla Softball team hosted the Glen Oaks Vikings in their opening MCCAA double-header. It was sort of a reversal of fortunes, as the Chargers stormed out and won the first contest in 5 innings, 9-1, while the Vikings took the second matchup by a 15-2 margin, also in 5 innings.
GAME-1 (MUAC 9, Glen Oakds 1): Marian Ancilla used a strong performance by Freshman starting pitcher Kimberly Cummings (3-3) to help control the first game. Cummings pitched all five innings, she allowed just one run on three hits, she walked two, but she struck out three. She was credited with her 3rd win of the season.
On the base paths, Freshman Morgan Fogle was 3-3, including a double, and she drove in a pair of runs. Sophomore Abigail Heaston also drove in a pair of runs, while Freshman Kierstin Schjoll reached base safely twice on a pair of singles, and she also knocked in a runner.
GAME-2 (Glen Oaks 15, MUAC 2): In the second outing, the Chargers managed just two runs on four hits and six walks in 5 innings, while the Vikings scored eight runs in the 3rd inning and another five in the 4th, hitting safely 16 times in their five times at-bat. Freshman Morgan Fogle had two of the Chargers’ four hits in this one, plus she had the only RBI for the team. Freshman pitcher Madison Lowe retired the final six Viking batters, allowing just one hit during her stretch of relief work.
The Chargers, who look to compete in the MCCAA this year, have won 3 games already this season, the most since the 2020-2021 campaign. They next take the field on Tuesday when they host Kalamazoo Valley in another conference doubleheader.
Games are set for 3 p.m. and 5 p.m.
