Plymouth girls slip past Valparaiso

VALPARAISO — The Plymouth Girls Tennis Team traveled to Valparaiso Monday, and after playing deep into the night, earned a hard-fought 3-2 victory over the host Vikings.
Valpo earned the first team point at two doubles, where Natalie Sheely and Lydia Wray fell to their counterparts in straight sets. The Plymouth one doubles team of Marley Christy and Emma Jackson then won their match in straight sets to tie up the team score at 1-1. Moments later, three singles Mia Hartley won her match in two tight 6-4 sets to put the Pilgrims up 2-1.
That left one singles, Tynley Gantz, and two singles, Sophia Cantero, on court to try to close out the win. Tynley was battling in a close match in the third set, and Sophia Cantero was in a tight battle still in the second set.
Gantz fell in three sets while Cantero won her second set tiebreaker 7-5 to force a third and deciding set for both her match and the overall team match.
Sophia raced out to a 4-0 lead in the third set using outstanding court coverage and consistency and later used several service winners to close out the set 6-3 and give the Pilgrims the dramatic early season win.
Plymouth earned more firsts Monday, as Mia Hartley earned her first career Varsity singles win, and Marley Christy earned her first career Varsity win.
“Valpo has a quality team again this year and we always play tight matches with them, which was the case again tonight,” said Plymouth coach Brad Haeck. “It was tough playing conditions with the wind, and I felt like both teams struggled with adjusting to it. This was a great early season match for us to gauge where we are at, see what we did well and what we need to work on, and just see how we responded to pressure situations.”
“Proud of the girls for battling tough conditions and opponents and finding a way to get the win. Sophia did a great job being determined and battling back from a first-set loss and eventually came through for us in the clutch.”
