Plymouth slips past Glenn
WALKERTON — Plymouth boys tennis traveled to Walkerton Wednesday night and captured a 3-2 victory over the host Falcons.
Senior Nick Manzuk and sophomore Liam Hanyzewski played solid tennis at the top of the Pilgrim singles lineup, both winning in straight sets to give Plymouth a 2-0 lead. The John Glenn 2D team of Owen Hamel-Bryce Rauen won in straight sets to make the score 2-1.
After winning a tight first set 7-5, the Plymouth 1D team of senior Owen Walleske and sophomore Benson Prater won another competitive second set 6-3 to take their match in straight sets and secure the Pilgrim team victory.
Freshman Caleb Edmiston, playing 3S Wednesday, won his first set before falling in a long three-set battle to make the final score 3-2.
“Overall, we are a young and inexperienced team, and there will be a big learning curve for some of us here at the beginning of the season,” said Plymouth coach Brad Haeck. “Playing any sport at a high level isn’t easy; you have to be willing to work hard and compete hard, and do some of the little things it takes to compete and win at a higher level. We did see some good things tonight, and we are no doubt happy to come out of here with a win. But we have a lot of areas that we need to continue to improve on. Hopefully, we can show improvement tomorrow night.”
“Nick and Liam did a nice job in their singles matches tonight, and Owen and Benson stepped up at 1D in some competitive moments and played winning tennis. We are excited about where Caleb is as a freshman with as little tennis as he has played. He took a tough loss tonight, but will learn from this experience, and he will continue to improve as the season moves on.”
Plymouth travels to Wawasee tonight for an NLC match up.
