Big first half leads Chargers
DONALDSON — Saturday afternoon marked “Sophomore Day” for the Marian University Ancilla Men’s Soccer team, and the Chargers wanted to send their Sophomores out in style against Alpena Community College. They did just that, scoring 3 first-half goals on the way to a 7-2 win against the Lumberjacks.
The match took a little while to get going, but the Chargers scored in the 20th minute, the 21st minute, and the 29th minute to take a 3-0 lead. Freshman Jahnoi Moses recorded the first tally, Freshman Jimy Gomez was responsible for the second, and Freshman Angel Rojas buried a penalty kick in the back of the net for the 3-0 lead. Sophomore Yeffreys Quintanilla assisted on each of the first two goals. Alpena did score in the waning moments of the first half, cutting the margin to 3-1 as the teams reached halftime.
But the second half wasn’t much different than the first, as Moses scored his second goal in the opening minute of the period. Freshman Carter Pinner added a goal, and Quintanilla scored a pair of his own down the stretch, while Alpena captured a late goal, for the 7-2 margin.
The Men’s Soccer team has four regular-season matches remaining, including hosting the Triceratops of Cuyahoga Community College this Wednesday at 4 p.m. It will be Retro Uniform Day, as the Chargers will wear uniforms from a past season.
