Second straight NLC win for Plymouth tennis
WARSAW — The Plymouth Girls Tennis Team travelled to Warsaw on Wednesday to continue their rained-out match from last Tuesday (4/21/26). When the matches resumed on Wednesday, the Pilgrims found themselves trailing on three of the five Varsity courts.
By the time the matches concluded on a cold and windy night, the Pilgrims found a way to win on four of the five Varsity courts and earn a quality NLC victory. The 4-1 team win included two three-set wins after dropping the first set.
Plymouth 2S player Mia Hartley was the first to finish on Wednesday, turning a 6-0, 2-0 lead into a straight set win. The Plymouth 1D team of Marisa Langfeldt and Lydia Wray, starting with a 3-1 lead, won their match in straight sets to give the Pilgrims a 2-0 team advantage.
Plymouth 3S player Allison Grobe started the night in a 4-0 deficit in her opening set. She fell 6-1 and trailed 3-1 in the second set, before rallying for three straight games to take a 4-3 second-set lead. Her opponent then responded and took the final three games to secure the straight win. It was Allison’s first loss in conference play.
After starting the night in a 5-2 hole in the opening set, Plymouth 1S player Sophia Cantero lost the first set 6-2, then regrouped and played aggressive tennis, taking the second and third sets by matching 6-1 scores to secure the team win.
In the final match to finish Wednesday, the Pilgrim 2D team of Hanley Feldman and Elly Kruyer lost the opening set (after trailing 3-1 to start the evening), but rallied to win the second and third sets by matching 6-4 scores and earn their second NLC win in a row and complete the 4-1 team win.
“Proud of how the girls battled some tough elements and quality opponents tonight,” said Plymouth coach Brad Haeck. “We didn’t have the greatest start to the match last week, but we played tough tonight in key spots and earned another tough NLC win. We have had a lot of rain and weather postponements this spring, but we really haven’t played in cold and wind much until tonight.
“I loved our mindset. The girls competed hard despite the elements, adjusted targets when necessary, and were mentally tough. It’s been hard to beat Warsaw the last several years. We haven’t beaten them since 2022, so we are certainly excited about this result.”
“Sophia and 2D (Hanley and Elly) both did a great job of regrouping after first set losses to earn wins in three sets,” he said. “As a team, hopefully, we can continue to build upon each performance and improve each match. Mishawaka is an improved program this year, and I’m excited to see how we handle another challenge tomorrow night.”
Next Match: Plymouth Varsity/JV will travel to Mishawaka Thursday, 4/30/26, for another NLC match with the Cavemen at Ward Baker Park, 5:30 PM start.
