Rhodes Hits 1,000 Points In Bobcat Win

She needed 17 points to get her milestone, but as is usually the case with Oregon-Davis Lady Bobcat basketball players, Mercedes Rhodes did twice as much, as she put up 34 in OD’s 74-27 win over Marquette Catholic.

In nearly poetic fashion, the 5’7 Junior came off a screen set by teammate Reece Danford to catch the pass. Fans could almost hear the music from the movie “Hoosiers” as the ball left Rhodes’ finger tips. The ball arched through the air with perfect rotation while Bobcat fans collectively held their breath. As the ball ripped through the net, the Bobcat Den exploded with the same type of exuberance fans have displayed after Sectional Championship victories. With an ear-to-ear smile that most only witness in toothpaste commercials, Rhodes joined her teammates in celebration, before being handed the game ball by Head Coach Terry Minix. After a few encouraging words from her coach, Rhodes bounded up the bleachers to hand the ball to her family, who greeted her with hugs in what had to be one of the most emotional moments in the already extremely successful career of Mercedes Rhodes.

“It means a lot” Rhodes commented after the game, “but I’m going for 1,500” she said with a giggle. Without hesitating, Rhodes was ready to give all the credit to her teammates when asked what the biggest key has been to her success as an individual throughout her career.

“Just my teammates helping me get open and giving me the best looks” she said. “I knew I had a lot of people watching me, so I knew I had to make it. I didn’t want to waste their time, so I had to score as many points as I could”.

Rhodes now joins Ashley Campbell, Aubrey Minix, Gabi Minix, Julie Awald, Erin Pearish, Kyleigh Kubik, Jesse Averone, Alicia McIntosh, Britta Johnson, Lexi Minix, and Sandy Blum in the 1,000 point club for girls basketball at Oregon-Davis!
