Consistency Biggest Key To Falcons Victory

The John Glenn Falcons were able to get their second Northern Indiana Conference victory of the year on Tuesday night, as they played host to South Bend Washington High School at TCU Gym.

The effort would be sparked, in the first half, by the combination of Carter Yung and Joe Delinski, who would combine for twenty-three of the Falcons’ thirty-five first half points. A fast paced first quarter would see a few too many turnovers, with the two teams combining for ten in the first eight minutes. Glenn would rely heavily on Carter Yung and Joe Delinski in, the first half, to provide much of the offense, as the duo would combine for twenty-three of the team’s thirty-five first half points. Silas Kaser would also provide a big spark for the Falcons, scoring nine in the first half.

The turnovers would not be nearly as big of a problem throughout the next three quarters, as both teams clearly put a bigger emphasis on taking care of the ball. Glenn would us a patient offense throughout the first half, but would not be deliberately stalling. The Falcons would consistently find ways of getting the ball in the basket, often times with driving baskets by Delinski and Yung, as Glenn would continue to attack with aggressive penetration. The Falcons would, once again, narrowly outscore the Panthers in the second quarter, putting up nineteen points to Washington’s fourteen, giving Glenn an eleven-point lead at the half, thirty-five to twenty-four. The Panthers had appeared to be gaining a little momentum from the three-point line, as they were able to knock down three first half three-point shots.

The third quarter would prove to be the defining quarter in the ballgame. Led by Jack Porter, the Falcons would explode in the scoring column, outscoring Washington twenty-three to eleven, stretching their lead to twenty-three points when the horn sounded. One of the main factors in that offensive explosion in the third quarter would be the scoring of Jack Porter. After only scoring three points in the first half, Porter would put up twelve of his fifteen points in the second, helping the Falcons jump out to a fifty-eight to thirty-five lead, as the two teams prepared for the final quarter. The biggest change in the fourth quarter would come with the Falcons’ strategy. After being aggressive on the offensive end of the floor throughout the game, the final eight minutes would see Glenn become much more deliberate with the ball. The clock would tick down for large stretches of time, as the Falcons did not want to all the extremely athletic Panthers a chance to possibly make a run late in the game. When the final horn sounded, the scoreboard showed a twenty point win for John Glenn, as they went into their locker room with a sixty-three to forty-three victory. The win put the Falcons one game over .500 in the conference and improves their overall record to fourteen and three.

“I thought we were very good at spreading the floor” Glenn Coach Travis Hannah said following the win. “This is two or three games in a row where we’ve been able to spread out our opponents and get some things going to the basket. Really, it’s predicated on Silas Kaser’s ability to handle the basketball and use those ball screens and create off the dribble. Obviously, when you put Carter Yung out on a wing and you get that penetration and able to knock down shots. Jack Porter comes up and knocks down some threes tonight. Defensively, we’ve been solid” Hannah continued. “I know they were out a starter, as we were, we didn’t rebound well in the first half, but I thought we did a better job in the second half. We’re a team that can get out and run with the best of them”.

The Starke County Co-Op Play of the Game on WKVI came in the second quarter with just three seconds remaining, when Jack Porter hit a three-point shot to give the Falcons a thirty-five to twenty-four lead.

The Ashley Derrickson/Five Star Player of the Game on WKVI went to John Glenn’s Joe Delinski, who scored all eleven of his points in the first half, helping the Falcons to an eleven point halftime lead. He also led the Falcons in rebounding with six, and steals with three in the win.

The Falcons will be back in action on Thursday night when they travel to Penn High School in another Northern Indiana Conference matchup.
