Chargers split over the weekend

SUGAR GROVE, IL — This weekend, the Marian Ancilla Men’s Basketball team participated in the Waubonsee Classic at Waubonsee Community College. Friday evening, they took on Joliet Junior College at the neutral site, coming out on top of the Wolves, 90-80, moving their record to 7-0. Saturday was a little different story, as they took on the host Chiefs. The Chargers were out-rebounded 43-32, and they couldn’t overcome a rough shooting night at all three levels, falling to host WCC, 93-71.
FRIDAY (W 90-80): In Friday’s matchup with Joliet, the inside-outside combination of Sophomores Ashton Oviedo a Triton High School grad, and Jayden Sanders was huge. Oviedo, proven to be an accurate perimeter shooter, was 5-7 from long range and 8-8 from the charity stripe, adding up to 23 points on the evening. He dished out 4 assists, collected 3 rebounds, and swiped a pair of steals as well. Sanders has been effective in most areas of the floor during his time at Marian Ancilla, but he was a monster on the glass Friday night, pulling down 18 rebounds, 7 of which came at the offensive end of the floor. He also scored 14 points and blocked 3 shots.
Freshman guard Matt King played a balanced game, scoring 15 points, handing out 5 assists, and chasing down 5 rebounds, while Sophomore wing Dante Porch was once again big off the bench, scoring 19 points on 7-10 shooting (3-3 from deep) in 21 minutes. Additionally, this marked the first game of the year Freshman guard Jordan Woods missed. The team’s leading scorer to date is currently out with an injury.
SATURDAY (L 93-71): During Saturday’s contest against the host Chiefs, the Chargers got behind early and could never really catch up. Waubonsee took a 51-34 lead into the locker room at halftime and never looked back. Once again, Sophomore forward Jayden Sanders posted a double-double with 16 points and 12 rebounds. Matt King was again good, contributing 16 points, 5 rebounds, 3 assists, and 2 steals. Sophomore Tyshaun Grundy offered support from the bench, scoring in double digits with 12 points, while handing out a pair of assists.
The Charger Men’s Basketball team is back in action Tuesday, as they take part in a women’s/men’s double-header at Olive-Harvey College in Chicago. The Women’s game begins at 6:30 p.m. ET/5:30 p.m. CT, with the Men’s game to follow at approximately 8:30 p.m. ET/7:30 p.m. CT.
