King’s triple/double leads the way for Chargers

BENTON HARBOR — The Marian University Ancilla Men’s Basketball team is still fighting for seeding this postseason, and Saturday’s performance looked like they were locked in. The Chargers traveled to Benton Harbor, Michigan, to take on the Lake Michigan Red Hawks, and they left with an impressive 109-78 win.
The Chargers used a 16-38 shooting performance from behind the arc, plus they were 54.5% overall shooting it from the field. The only place they did struggle was a 9-21 effort from the charity stripe, or else they might have topped 120 points. They took care of the ball (8 turnovers), rebounded well (50 caroms, 11 offensive), and impressively assisted on 34 of their 42 made field goals.
From an individual standpoint, freshman guard Matt King posted a triple-double with 15 points, 13 rebounds, and 10 assists. Four others scored in double figures, with sophomore wing Dante Porch leading the way in a reserve role with 21 points. Sophomore Tyshaun Grundy (17 points, 4 assists, 2 blocked shots), sophomore Jayden Sanders (15 points, 8 rebounds, 4 assists), and freshman Jordan Woods (14 points, 6 assists, 4 rebounds) joined them.
The Chargers now control whether or not they finish second, third, or fourth in the Western Division. They currently sit at 20-8 overall and 9-4 in the division. Lansing and Glen Oaks are right behind them, each 8-5 in the division with one game to go. If the Men finish second or third, they will host the first round of the NJCAA Division II Great Lakes District Tournament on Tuesday, March 4th. If they somehow finish fourth, they would have to travel for their opening postseason game.
Up next, the Marian Ancilla Men’s Basketball team will finish their season with Kellogg Community College (13-11, 4-9) on Tuesday. Tip time for the game is approximately 7:30 p.m., following the women’s game. The two teams matched up back on February 1st, with the Chargers winning 75-60 in Battle Creek, Michigan.
