Redskin Boys Make It Two For Knox, At Winamac

Just 24 hours after the Knox Lady Redskins earned a 42-33 win over the Winamac Lady Warriors, it was the boys turn on the hardwood, as the Knox Redskins invaded Winamac Gymnasium for a big Hoosier North Athletic Conference matchup.

The entire game was everything the fans guessed it would be, two squads that truly believe in “team” basketball. The Warriors and the Redskins went back and forth throughout the first quarter, with neither team backing down on either end of the floor. When the dust settled, the two teams found themselves knotted at 11-11 at the end of the first quarter. Defensive versatility would be on incredible display between the two teams, as the fans were treated to a variety of man-to-man, as well as zone defenses in both the full and half courts.

The Redskins would begin to pull away somewhat in the second quarter, as Sophomore Kole McIntire would shoulder the bulk of the scoring load for Knox, dropping 11 of his game-high 21 points in the first half. On the defensive end for Knox, it would be Gunner Wagner who would be terrorizing the Warriors, as he would come up with 3 steals in the ballgame to lead the Redskins. Winamac relied heavily on their physicality throughout the first half, which was illustrated in the rebounding category, as they out rebounded Knox 14-10, taking the lead from Junior Carson Bennett, who had a game-high 8 rebounds. From an offensive standpoint, it would be Russell Compton and Will Larkin who would take the reigns, scoring 13 of the team’s 20 first half points, with Compton putting up 7 to lead the team, while Larkin added 6.

The second half would see continued consistency in the scoring column from Knox’s McIntire, who continued to allow the game to come to him, as he was very patient, and not looking to force any shots. The Redskins ball movement throughout the second half allowed Knox to avoid many of the trapping attempts by the Warriors’ defense. Junior Cade Short would be a consistent force for Knox, putting up 12 points, scoring 6 in each half, while also pulling down 7 rebounds from his guard position. In addition to his solid numbers, Short would also be involved in much of the ball handling responsibilities, helping the Redskins to avoid the dangerous versatility of the Winamac defense.

In the end, the Redskins were able to pull away with a big Hoosier North Athletic Conference win on the road with a great team effort. Kole McIntire’s 21 points, 7 rebounds, and 2 steals would earn him the Ashley Derrickson/Five Star Player of the Game honors on WKVI, following the win.

Knox improves to 7-3 on the year with a 3-0 record in the HNAC, while Winamac falls to 4-7 overall and 1-3 in HNAC play. The Redskins will be back in action on January 17th, when they travel to LaVille, while Winamac will continue their battle with Starke County, as they will play host to North Judson on the 17th, then turn around to play host to Oregon-Davis on the 18th.
