Fans Cry Wolf, After Amber Hits Her 1,000th Point!

It was no great secret what was on the minds of Satellite fans at South Central Junior-Senior High School on Monday night, as the Lady Satellites played host to the Boone Grove Lady Wolves. Senior Amber Wolf was a mere fourteen points away from becoming the fifth Lady Satellite to hit 1,000 career points.

The 6’0 Senior would hit the mark in the second quarter of play. After attempting to drive to the basket, Wolf was forced to kick the ball out to teammate Faith Biggs, after the Boone Grove defense had collapsed around her. After making the pass, Wolf cut back to the wing and stepped behind the 3-point line, where she received a return pass from Biggs. With a defender closing out on Wolf, she was able to step into her shot, and release the ball with confidence. The ball rotated through the air as if guided by an actual satellite from outer space, with a perfect arc and rotation, the ball ripped through the net. The Satellite faithful exploded with cheer, as the moment had finally arrived for the hardworking Amber Wolf.

“When I first shot it, I was like ‘oh no!’, I probably shouldn’t have forced it”, Wolf said following the game. “But then it went in and I was so emotional” she said with a smile. “I was so happy. It was definitely a blessing”. When asked what the biggest key to getting to 1,000 points had been for her, Wolf added, with no hesitation, “Just always being aggressive and definitely my teammates. That was a whole team effort, they did a great job of getting me the ball. They’re just really helpful”.

Hitting the 1,000 point mark had been a goal of Wolf’s going back to her Freshman year. “I set a ton of goals Freshman year” she said. “One of them was Sectionals, PCC (Porter County Conference), to win the Winter Classic Tournament, and 1,000 points. I just had a ton of goals and 1,000 points was like my last goal that I needed to achieve, and doing that tonight was why I was so emotional”.

Getting to see one of his players hit the 1,000 point mark, Head Coach Wes Bucher was all smiles when asked about the kind of athlete Amber Wolf is.

“There’s not enough words to describe Amber”, Bucher said following the game. “She’s a great leader, she’s committed to everything she does, she has a kind heart, and she’s very driven”. Bucher began to gain energy as he continued his thoughts on the Satellites’ star. “You can see it every second she’s out on the court. She’s going to give 100%, she’s always been there, always one that’s been extremely committed to being a leader”.

Even though the gym was exploding with excitement, and rightfully so, for the major individual accomplishment of Amber Wolf, Coach Bucher was just as excited for his Lady Satellites to get the big home win against a conference opponent.

“I can’t give my team enough credit” Bucher said. “Especially coming off a tough loss at Valpo. This was a very nice way to respond for us”, he continued. “I was very impressed with our man-defense tonight. We came out tonight and we played some very solid pressure defense”.

Wolf is now in very elite company at South Central, as she is currently 5th on the girls all-time scoring list, behind Mallory Gorski (1,628), Riley Popplewell (1,512), Anna Kammrath (1,090), and Jill Rosenbaum (1,068).

With such a great win, it was easy for Bucher to talk up multiple individuals who had excellent contributions throughout the night.

“I’m going to give Elle Kimmel and Falyn Anthony some big credit” he said. “They don’t get a ton of reps at the varsity level, but even in practice they’re never down. They’re great leaders for the Junior Varsity” he continued, “and they get out here and they play great quality minutes for us. They show they can play both games”.

The Lady Satellites will be off until Friday, January 3rd when they travel to Rochester to take on the Lady Zebras.
