Plymouth tennis edged by Warsaw
PLYMOUTH — The Plymouth Girls Tennis Team hosted rival Warsaw at the Mary Beth Hunter Tennis Complex on Tuesday night, falling by a close 3-2 final score to the District-Ranked Tigers.
1S Tynley Gantz and 3S Mia Hartley fell in straight sets. For Tynley, it was her third All-State Singles opponent (from 2024) in her last four matches played. Her Warsaw opponent, Addie Lind, is the three-time defending NLC Champion at #1 Singles.
Both Plymouth doubles tandems secured straight set wins. The Plymouth 2D team of Natalie Sheely and Marisa Langfeldt overcame some unforced errors and a slow start (4-5 first set deficit) to win the final 9 games of their match and down their Warsaw counterparts 7-5, 6-0.
The Plymouth 1D team of Marley Christy and Emma Jackson continued their strong play and stayed undefeated on the young season, beating a strong Senior Warsaw 1D pair in two pretty convincing sets.
In the last match to finish, Plymouth 2S player Sophia Cantero won the first set via tiebreaker, but ultimately fell in three tough sets. Sophia battled hard against a strong Warsaw opponent, a player who hits the ball with tons of pace and has occupied Warsaw’s 2S position for the last four years.
“Warsaw won the NLC Championship last season and returned 5 of their top 7 players,” said Plymouth coach Brad Haeck. “They are the team to beat in the conference this season. We were right with them, in a match that could have gone either way. While I’m disappointed that we came up a little short, I’m proud of our effort and how we competed overall against a strong team. We will continue to work hard to improve. Hopefully, we can learn from this loss and regroup quickly, as we have another strong NLC opponent on the road tomorrow at NorthWood.”
Plymouth is now 4-3 on the season.
