Plymouth tennis takes NLC road thriller
GOSHEN — Plymouth hit the road Tuesday for the second night in a row, this time heading to Goshen to take on the RedHawks. By the end of the night, the Pilgrims were able to take a close 3-2 victory and hand Goshen their first defeat of the season.
The Plymouth 2D team of Natalie Sheely and Marisa Langfeldt was the first match to finish, winning in straight sets and giving the Pilgrims early momentum.
A short time later, both 2S Sophia Cantero and 1S Tynley Gantz fell in straight sets to make the team score 2-1 in favor of Goshen. Both Tynley and Sophia made their opponents work for their victories, and the matches themselves were much more competitive than the scores would indicate.
Plymouth 3S player Mia Hartley then finished off her match in straight sets.
The scores themselves were very lopsided, but it was another match that featured many long and competitive rallies and tight games that Mia was able to win at a high percentage.
That left the Plymouth 1D team of Marley Christy and Emma Jackson as the last match on court, with the team score tied at 2-2 and the Plymouth duo trailing by a set. Marley and Emma led 4-1 in the first set before falling 6-4, but were able to regroup to take the second set in a tiebreaker.
Both Marley and Emma stepped up with timely serving and aggressive net play.
After losing the first game of the third set, Marley and Emma won the final six games of the match and secured the third set and the team win.
In the final set alone, Marley and Emma won two games in which they trailed 15-40 and four games where the score was 30-30 before they found a way to win all those games. Overall, the Plymouth senior doubles duo stepped up and played winning tennis in the final set, which contributed to the win.
“This was an exciting win for our girls and a great night for Plymouth Tennis,” said Plymouth coach Brad Haeck. “We have been on the losing end of some of these close matches, so credit to our girls for learning from those and stepping up and playing to win in big points throughout their matches. Marley and Emma really elevated their games at the end of the second set and into the third set of their match.”
Plymouth hosts Northridge for Senior Night Thursday, 5/8/25, 5:00 PM start.
