Plymouth tennis hosts Crossroads Classic

PLYMOUTH — Plymouth Boys Tennis hosted the Crossroads Classic early-season invite Saturday at the Mary Beth Hunter Tennis Complex in Plymouth. The Invite is a set double dual match format, with Plymouth playing dual matches against Leo and FW Carroll, while Kokomo played dual matches against FW Carroll and Leo as well.
The Pilgrims lost their first match of the day to Leo 5-0.
The Lions are perennially a district-ranked team from District 2 and maintain a strong tennis program. The most competitive match of the morning was on the 2D court, where the Plymouth 2D team of Benson Prater and Landon Tyler battled their counterparts before falling in a tight match 6-4, 7-6.
After an hour and a half rain delay, the Pilgrims squared off with the Fort Wayne Carroll Chargers in round two, once again falling by a 5-0 final score. FW Carroll is a program typically ranked in the Top 20 in the Indiana Boys State Rankings, and should be ranked among the 10-15 best teams in the state again this season. The most competitive match of round two was on the 1D court, where Seniors Nick Manzuk and Owen Walleske played some quality tennis against an All-State level opponent before falling in straight sets.
The Pilgrims singles trio of 1S Liam Hanyzewski, 2S Caleb Edmiston, and 3S Brogan Mahoney all lost both their matches Saturday, but battled hard throughout and have shown improvement this week.
“This is always a great early season test for our boys teams with being able to play two quality opponents. Leo has another strong team, and FW Carroll might be a top 10 team this year when all is said and done,” said Plymouth coach Brad Haeck. “With how we altered our lineup today, our singles were overmatched, but I appreciated them battling hard against their opponents. They are continuing to develop their games, trying to become more consistent in their strokes and develop their strategies and skills. Our doubles were able to be a little more competitive today. I’m excited to see them continue to find ways to get to the net and be aggressive on the court.”
Plymouth Varsity/JV travels to Peru’s Thrush Courts on Tuesday, for a 5 PM start.
