MUAC volleyball grabs split

DONALDSON — The Marian University Ancilla Women’s Volleyball team split a pair of matches this past week, moving to 7-5 overall on the season.
The seventh win was their most in the last seven seasons On Tuesday, they fell 3-sets-to-1 to an always good Southwestern Michigan team, then rallied on Wednesday to defeat Elgin Community College, 3-0.

Southwestern Michigan (L 3-1)
The Chargers battled some nerves in the first set, hosting their first MCCAA match of the season against a talented Roadrunners squad. They fell behind 1-0 with a 25-13 first set loss. But they would rally in the second, winning the set 25-21 and evening the match at 1 set apiece. The Roadrunners and Chargers went back & forth over the final two periods, but Southwestern Michigan was able to use its experience and consistency to win each of the final two sets, 25-18 and 25-18. Sophomore Kaitlynn Kelderhouse (26 SR Att) and Freshman Alex Sutherlin (22 SR Att) played flawless when in the back row, while Freshman Adalynn Garza (.211 hitting) led the team with 13 kills up front…more than double any other Charger. Kelderhouse (15), Garza (11), and Sophomore Emma LaPato (10) all hit double-digits in digs, while Freshman Anna Christopher led the way with 23 assists on the evening.

Elgin (W 3-0)
Marian Ancilla bounced back on Wednesday, winning a straight-set match against a much-improved Elgin Spartans team, 25-17, 25-16, 25-18. Leading the navy & gold on Wednesday was Freshman Adalynn Garza once again with 9 kills and 3 service aces. Freshman Anna Christopher was once again solid in a setting role, passing out 23 assists. Freshmen Miranda Woodard and Maliya Freeman-Gates were strong blocking at the net, while Freshman Alex Sutherlin had 12 digs.
The Women’s Volleyball team returns to action this week with two more MCCAA conference matchups. Tuesday, they host Glen Oaks Community College at the LifePlex at 6:30 p.m., then Thursday, they travel to Lake Michigan College, where they will take on the Red Hawks that evening.
