Plymouth boys play at Penn Invite
MISHAWAKA — The Plymouth Boys Tennis Team travelled to Penn on Saturday to play in the Concord Invitational. After matches were postponed during the first round due to rain, play was resumed indoors in the South Bend Racquet Club. The Invitational was ultimately shortened to just two dual matches, with the Pilgrims losing to Lake Central and Huntington North by 5-0 scores.
In Match #1, the District-Ranked Indians proved to be a formidable opponent, with the Pilgrims playing just one competitive match, where Seniors Nick Manzuk and Owen Walleske lost 6-3, 6-2 at 1D.
In Match #2, the Pilgrims played a little closer with a solid Huntington North team, playing competitive matches at both doubles positions. The Plymouth 2D team of Benson Prater and Landon Tyler played solid tennis but still fell in straight sets 6-3, 6-4.
In the most competitive match of the day, the Plymouth 1D team of Nick Manzuk and Owen Walleske overcame deficits in both sets vs. Huntington North. In the first set, Nick and Owen battled back from a 4-1 deficit to fall in a tiebreaker 7-6(7-3). In the second set, Nick and Owen rallied from a 3-0 deficit to win 6-3 and force the deciding super tiebreaker, which they would ultimately lose 10-4.
“It was another tough day for our team, but I feel like we continue to see improvement in the guys’ matches,” said Plymouth coach Brad Haeck. “Benson and Landon can take some positives away from their second match, and Nick and Owen battled hard in both sets to rally back from deficits. We will continue to work hard in practice and strive for improvement in matches.”
Plymouth Varsity hosts Mishawaka for Senior Night on Tuesday, 5:30 PM start. Seniors will be honored after the match.
